Film Critique (individual work) The movie Te doy mis ojos (Take My Eyes) is a Spanish romantic drama created by Icíar Bollaín in 2003. The movie was highly lauded for the emotional truths of its portrayal of domestic violence, and the internal conflicts of the character, it wins seven Goya Awards in 2004, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Lead Actor, Best Lead Actress, and Best Supporting Actress and also nominated for the Ariel Award in 2005 in the category Best Iberoamerican Film. The movie talks about domestic violence by using the relationship between husband and wife, family and workplace. The aim of the movie is arousing public to concern about domestic violence, patriarchy and the relationship between patriarchy and the state in Spain. In the past, domestic violence is very serious in Spain. Since 1995, there are more than 1,390 women have been murdered in Spain by male attackers and 84 cases of murders of women by men have been recorded (Heckle, 2015). Because of the idea of General Franco, he thinks a woman was a man's legal property (BBC NEWS, 2004), girl need to obey to man. The old idea affects the public awareness of women problem, therefore the domestic violence has getting worse in that time. Afterwards, in the 1990s films portraying Latinos would take a somehow new direction, one of the most famous filmmakers would be Gregory Navas, he directed the movie My Family/Mi Familia, a film that portrays the lives of a Mexican-American family and the difficulty that the couple faced in order to establish in the U.S. “by passing as immigrants and all the struggle to integrate their family in another country” (Peña Acuña, 2010). The film let the audience see a potential reality that most immigrants went through when they first moved to the United States and how the system worked differently and the way immigrants had to adapt not only to the system, but also to the language and culture.
The movie, “The Perfect Dictatorship” (“La Dictadura Perfecta”), directed and produced by Luis Estrada and released in 2014, is a political, satirical comedy story of two reporters attempting to repair the image of a corrupt governor after he signs a deal with the boss of their television company, Television Mexicana. Not many Spanish women do what Ana did for multiple of reasons, if they got to see this film they would be inspired by the message. The message in this movie would help many women realize they can do more, and to not be afraid to be a little rude if they have to. Sometimes a woman has to be rude to get anywhere, for they get Knocked down by the community. The cultural norms of the Spanish community need to make more progress, and at the moment Spanish women are fighting to make that progress
By examining the narrative voice as well as the cultural restraints placed on them, readers can see the sexist culture in the novel and that the novel itself does not necessarily advocate this misogyny. Yunior, a Dominican man, is the overall narrator of the novel, so readers essentially see everything through his masculine eye. When discussing a brief fling with Lola, Oscar’s sister, Yunior says, “Even those nights after I got jumped she wouldn’t let me steal on her ass for nothing. So you can sleep in my bed but you can’t sleep with me?” (Diaz 169) His question suggests that it is his right to sleep with her, and his discussion of Lola herself objectifies her by noting only her body and her refusal to use it. This objectification is clearly sexist, but it is a reflection of the narrative voice, Yunior, not of Lola. Yunior will casually refer to a woman as “a bitch” (Diaz 183), which is clearly demeaning, but it is a man’s view and does not reflect on the substance of the women. It shows readers the culture he was raised in, not an actual portrayal of the women, illustrating a misogynist society but not a misogynistic novel. The music in this film adds a good touch of hope, tension, and danger at the right points in time. It is really hard to see what is going to happen next because it’s not scripted, and a great concern arises when the children being follow go missing, as it really happens to a lot of people coming across the borders. Bodies of unidentified people turn up constantly like in the intro of the film, and those remains are saved just in case families search for them. “La Bestia” itself symbolizes different things to the different migrants like a dangerous journey with light a light at the end of the tunnel.This film would greatly interest the young because it shows the harder side of someone their age might go through. Just when you think your life is hard, you see what others have to go through to have a fraction of what most take for granted.

Are we human if we don’t have a choice to choose between acting good or acting evil? A Clockwork Orange directed by Stanley Kubrick is a brutal film that entails many sociological meanings. Alex DeLarge and his “droogs” (gang) live in a derange society of “ultra-violence” and rape. Alex and his gang cause havoc around the town that leads to the “droogs” turning on Alex during a mischievous act on an innocent women and Alex getting arrested. While in prison he is chosen for “treatment” that is suppose to purify Alex and turn him into the “perfect citizen”. We’ve gone over many sociological concepts in class, but the three that I believe apply the most to this film are socialization, deviance, and resocialization.
The antagonistic nature of man verses woman is illustrated through Allende’s description and reactions of Clara and Esteban. Men and women are at the opposite ends of the spectrum of human nature, women know that men like to think they are in charge, because it gives them power, so women give into this little whim for the peace of mind and happiness that are essential in any relationship. Their instincts make their influence much more threatening and rebellious than the rage of one man who does not get his way. The women of Allende’s world are vibrant, spiritual, sensible and loving, the men are volatile, strong, and passionate, while they may be stereotypical, they help portray the true nature of man verses woman. Women may be physically weaker than men but they can match wits and daring with them any time.
In conclusion, I liked this movie because it showed women of very different backgrounds coming together, accepting each other, and becoming close friends during a crisis moment. In reality of today’s society, I saw that women are jealous against each other instead of working together. This movie shows the joy of overcoming differences and forming bonds with diverse women. In a very simple term, the director reminds us of the unique book of life that we each have. The other message is how the older are separate from society, because of their limitations and age. The older ladies in this movie shows us and other older people how to bloom again, and relive. In this movie they share their life, their tales, and their lessons from the past with us to change our typical mentality about older people.
