William Sleator’s story, “The Elevator” takes place in an apartment building. Martin, a thin 12 year old, is afraid of this fat lady on the apartment's elevator. In this story, Martin sees this fat lady on the elevator, he gets scared of her cause she stares at him when he rides. His dad is not being supportive of him so he has to figure the problem out on his own. On lesson the story suggests is Family isn’t Always Supportive. From the beginning, the description describes how the fat lady looks and how his dad didn’t even say anything supportive. He says things like “Honestly now you are afraid of some old lady.” His dad is disappointed in him because he ran out of the elevator when he first saw her. This shows that Family isn’t Always
