Rihanna’s song, “American Oxygen,” promotes pride and hope in being an American. The song contains the concept of becoming successful as it generalizes the idea that “you can be anything at all.” This line suggests that anyone has the capability to have the career they want. This statement is more of a hope one may have rather than an actual possibility as conflicts one must overcome to be successful are not addressed.
The human race is an incredible group that expresses their feelings in numerous ways! Singers and rappers express their feelings through song; poets express their feelings through their poetry, and artist express their feelings through their art. Dwayne Michael Carter, Jr., better known by his stage name Lil Wayne, is a 33-year-old American hip hop recording artist from New Orleans, Louisiana, he produced a political and controversial rap song entitled “Georgia …Bush” An incredible seven and a half minutes of music as a tribute to New Orleans, and to criticize the way president George bush handled hurricane Katrina, the war in Iraq, and the way he was governing the country. The setting for this song takes place in New Orleans; right after Hurricane, Katrina destroyed most of the city. The music video featured a large pool of water, destroyed communities, as well as human remains. This song was a massive controversy. Did Lil Wayne go too far when he published this song? Did he let his feeling get the best of him?
My personal choice memoir was The World is Moving Around Me by Dany Laferrière, it was a memoir about the Haiti earthquake. Throughout the memoir Laferrière conveys not only his emotions, but his peers. His choice of words and phrases made this novel not only about the Haiti earthquake, but the country of Haiti and its people. His fixed descriptions show this event didn’t only move him physically, but mentally. Lastly, Laferrières connection to the people out side of Haiti, specifically the United States is key to show the world wide impact.
In Verhsawn Ashanti Young’s article titled, “Nah, We Straight: An argument Against Code Switching,” he makes his objectives clear as he argues against people Right to their own language. The author questions the advantage of standard American English as opposed to other types of English. He refers to those aspect as code switching, which he believes can lead to racist thinking. Code switching, according to Young, calls out for one way of speaking to be omitted in favor of others, based on one's rhetorical situations. The author points out that students are required to translate from Afro-American English or Spanglish to standard English and not the other way around, which is concerning. The book that I read is called Love Comes Softly by Janette Oke. It is about a woman named Marty who goes out west with her new husband Clem to find their own land so they can start their own life. But while they live there Clem dies and Marty is now a widow. Marty ends up marrying Clark Davis because Clark is also widower. Marty in the end finds true love with Clark.

Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Broadway musical, Hamilton, perpetuates the notion that hard work allows the ambitious to beat the odds and better themselves along with their country. With a cast comprised of people of color, Manuel reimagines the romanticized American Revolution to inspire a diverse audience to attain the American Dream. I decided to expand on my Week 5 Post All About That Bass. Our assignment for that week was to analyze Meghan Trainor’s song All About That Bass and to give our opinion on what message we believe the song lyrics and video provided the public with. The second part of our assignment also involved watching “It’s Not About the Nail” and the Dave Barry article that addressed stereotypes about gender and what affect they might have on individuals.
Feeling unwanted from the closest people in your life who turn away from you when you need them the most, is the worst feeling a person can endure. I chose the song “My Story” by Sean McGee, because people young and old can relate to his song. People from different backgrounds can relate to each other when there are living homeless or raised as a foster child. Sean McGee wrote “my daddy don’t know, my momma don’t care, it don’t matter if I’m here, it don’t matter if I’m dead” people all around the world have the same issues and share a common culture. A master status is the most important status a person occupies, this is a key factor in determining a person’s social position.
“We Found Love” is a popular song produced by Calvin Harris and features singer Rihanna. “We Found Love” reached the number one spot in the top charts in multiple countries in 2012 and the music video became popular very quickly after being filmed in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The music video features a young couple living in an impoverished council estate in West Belfast. Both characters portrayed in the music video are in their twenties and of mixed race, one parent being black and the other being Caucasian. Their relationship is distinguished by domestic violence as the couple is seen yelling, pushing and hurting one another, along with stealing from convenience stores, gambling and abusing drugs and alcohol together.
Everyone in America is given an opportunity to pursue any dream that his or her heart so desires. He or she will give it little importance, sometimes knowing or not knowing that it’s a once in a lifetime chance. In America, some people are given equal opportunity and some aren’t. Usually given at a favorable occasion, opportunity is something that can change an Americans life for a short or long term. Me being an American, if I was given an opportunity to make my life better, I would take it, but it is up to you as an person in America to make the best use of it.
"Truly Alone" by Insane Clown Posse, 2004; I chose this song from Insane Clown Posse's Hell's Pit album for my mix-tape because it is one of the prime examples of the often-violent nature of their lyrics. The song begins mellow telling the story of an individual's life and how lonely it is and that he doesn't feel like anyone would notice if he died. In the chorus, he is explaining how someone can only be alone for a limited duration of time before that man goes insane.
