Sophocles, Arthur Miller, and William Shakespeare, all prominent playwrights of their era, still have plays that are performed today. In fact, “Oedipus Rex,” by Sophocles, “Death of a Salesman,” by Arthur Miller, and “Hamlet,” by William Shakespeare are all broadway performances. “Oedipus Rex” portrays a man’s attempt to escape tragic prophecies of his life; nevertheless, fate proves inevitable, for Oedipus, unknowingly, not only murders his father but also marries his mother. “Death of a Salesman” exemplifies an ignorant man chasing a dream of being a successful businessman; yet, his false belief of being “well-liked” by many people leads to his downfall. “Hamlet” displays how the indecisiveness of man proves to be a tragic flaw, for Hamlet …show more content…

Oedipus perseveres through his quest to discover the murderer of the former king, explaining to the citizens that he dedicates all of his effort to the investigation. Oedipus states, “On these accounts I, as for my own father/ Will fight this fight, and follow out every clue/ Seeking to seize the author of his murder”(10). Oedipus ensures his people that he devotes all of his effort, attempting to resolve the plague among the city. In addition, although Oedipus receives warnings to stop his investigation, his determination drives him to know nothing less than the entire truth. Due to his excessive desire to know the truth, Oedipus “will not hearken- not to know the whole”(36). Oedipus’ determination blinds him from knowing that he is the killer; as a result, he continues to pursue the truth. Furthermore, through his extensive amount of determination, Oedipus eventually discovers the information that he desires; however, his determination leads him to discover that he is the murder of his father and husband of his …show more content…

For instance, Willy anticipates that his success as a salesman will, in time, prospore to him having his “own business, and I’ll never have to leave home any more”(1; 30). Willy displays his determination by focussing on no other goal in his life than becoming a profitable business man. Moreover, Willy takes pride in his life as a businessman, hoping to be successful; therefore, he seems insulted when offered another job. Willy questions, “What’s the matter with you? I’ve got a job!”(2; 72) Willy does not make a sufficient amount as a salesman; yet, his determination to be a prosperous salesman hinders him from taking on a new job.
