.Langston Hughes wrote the poem “Negro” in 1922. After emancipation, African Americans tried to locate a protected place to embrace music, liberal arts, and theater.African Americans found this in Harlem and used their artistic skills to press for racial equality. This poem is meant to illustrate the presence of blacks throughout history, highlight their global contributions, and illuminate their sufferings.
To begin with, in the first stanza, he describes his identity. He calls himself a “Negro” and uses similes to compare his skin tone to the “dark night” and the “depths of his Africa”(908).The speaker is suggesting that he is proud to be an African American although slaves go through hardship. The speaker wants people to know that he is an African American by describing his identity and where his skin tone originated. The night is a positive comparison it is part of nature and is beautiful with the stars and moon. African is another positive comparison a beautiful desert-like place with plenty of sunlight and beauty. He embraces his skin tone and compares it to the beauty of nature to show how proud he is of his skin tone.
Secondly, in the second stanza, he describes how African Americans were slavesfor an extended period of time.He uses an allusion to historical events to get the reader to feel what the slaves are going through. He says, “Caesar told me to keep his door-step clean” to demonstrate the total span of time African Americans were neglected (908). The speaker also mentions that “he’s brushed the boots of Washington”. This is another allusion; this time he is referring to George Washington. ... This shows the suffering of African Americans throughout history and their worldwide role in enlightening others about it. The readers can feel the emotions of hatred, sadness, and cruelty from the pain from the African Americans. Slaves didn’t deserve to be slaves and African Americans didn’t deserve to be abused mentally and physically.
In conclusion, this poem illustrates the presence of blacks in history, it emphasizes their worldwide contributions, and enlightens others about their troubles. Slavery lasted for a long period of time and the sufferings of these people made history. African Americans created Jazz music and constructed many buildings with their bare hands. These are just two of many examples detailing how African Americans made a significant mark on history. However, they also experienced hardships and were victims of racism in their society.
