Mary Cassatt, an American printmaker, and painter was born in 1844 in Pennsylvania. Cassatt’s family perceived traveling as an essential part of the learning process thus she had the advantage of visiting various capitals such as Paris, London, and Berlin. Cassatt studied to become a professional artist and attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. She later went to study in France under Thomas, Couture, Jean-Leon Gerome, and others. She spent a significant part of her adult life in France. When in France, she initially befriended Edgar Degas, a famous French artist, and later her works were exhibited among other impressionists. Cassatt depicts the young girl alone within a domestic exterior. The informal posture, as well as the evident brushwork, are attributed to impressionism while the asymmetrical structure, the hasty scene cropping, and the shallow space indicate the Japanese art inspirations. An influential American printmaker and painter as she was known for impressionist style in the 1880s, which reflected her ideas of the modern women and created artwork that displayed the maternal embrace between women and children; Mary Cassatt was truly the renowned artist in the 19th century. Cassatt exhibited her work regularly in Pennsylvania where she was born and raised in 1844. However, she spent most of her life in France where she was discovered by her mentor Edgar Degas who was the very person that gave her the opportunity that soon made one of the only American female Impressionist in Paris. An exhibition of Japanese woodblock Cassatt attends in Paris inspired her as she took upon creating a piece called, “Maternal Caress” (1890-91), a print of mother captured in a tender moment where she caress her child in an experimental dry-point etching by the same artist who never bared a child her entire life. Cassatt began to specialize in the portrayal of children with mother and was considered to be one of the greatest interpreters in the late 1800s.

The composition of this painting forces the eye to the woman, and specifically to her face. Although the white wedding dress is large and takes up most of the woman’s figure, the white contrasts with her face and dark hair, forcing the viewer to look more closely into the woman’s face. She smokes a cigarette and rests her chin on her hands. She does not appear to be a very young woman and her eyes are cast down and seem sad. In general, her face appears to show a sense of disillusionment with life and specifically with her own life. Although this is apparently her wedding day, she does not seem to be happy.
Mary Cassatt is one of the most famous female figures in the art world and aided in the popularization of Impressionism. Her work was simple yet impactful, and left its viewers wanting more. The main focus in most of her works was of mother and child or of women doing simple daily tasks. Her broken brush strokes and bright color palettes made her pieces pleasant and full of life. Though her work was not at first accepted, she kept painting and worked hard to make a name for herself and to change the art world into something more diverse and accepting.
At the time, women were not allowed to actually study in the French academy so private instruction was the only option. Gérôme was one of the most requested instructors at the institution, so it was no small feat that Cassatt managed to impress him with her early work. It was under Gérôme’s guidance that she would enhance her formal skills by going to the Louvre daily to copy the artwork on display. Students, like Cassatt, could pay their way through private lessons or schooling by selling the copies of artwork they made at the Louvre to American tourists. At about the same time as Cassatt’s permanent move to Paris, Paris was in the midst of social and artistic change from the previous status quo. Along with the changing aesthetics came the emergence of a new radical group of artists who attempted to break away from previous academic tradition. This group would soon be known as the Impressionists. Cassatt herself would not become apart of this group for the next decade however, and continued to work in a more traditional manner so she could submit her artwork to the Paris Salon. As the Paris Salon did not select as many of her pieces as she had hoped, she grew frustrated and started to move away from the more classic style. Other members of the French Impressionist Group include, Monet, Renoir, Cezanne and Degas. Cassatt was known as “the painter and poet of the nursery” (Advameg 6). Cassatt painted members of her family and frequently painted her sister Lydia, who resided in Paris, with Cassatt until she passed away after battling an illness for a large amount of time until she passed away in 1882. After her sister’s death Cassatt took a break from painting. (Creative Commons License 14). Cassatt also painted a portrait of her mother entitled Reading Le Figaro (Creative Commons License 15). Later in Cassatt’s career she moved away from impressionism and Cassatt’s new painting style did not fit in any movement (World Biography 6). Her new painting style was simpler than impressionism (Creative Commons License 19). Later in life after taking a trip to Egypt Cassatt viewed the art done by the ancient Egyptians and began to question her level of skill and the artwork that she had created thus far. One of Cassatt’s friends that went on the trip had contracted a disease in Egypt and shortly after their return home, died. These two instances left Cassatt depressed and unable to paint, this loss was emotionally draining and physically jarring and
Anne Bradstreet starts off her letter with a short poem that presents insight as to what to expect in “To My Dear Children” when she says “here you may find/ what was in your living mother’s mind” (Bradstreet 161). This is the first sign she gives that her letter contains not just a mere retelling of adolescent events, but an introspection of her own life. I recently went to the DeYoung Museum for the Impressionist exhibit. The paintings were exquisite, as expected, but what was shocking was only one female artist out of all the others shown, were by male artists. It parallels with what I have been learning in class, that women artist were completely underrepresented and suppressed because of their gender. I will be describing a brief synopsis about Mary Cassatt’s life. Then I will be talking about the subject of the woman, her mother, in the painting. And finally, what caught my attention to Mary Cassatt’s, Mrs. Robert S. Cassatt, the Artist’s Mother painting, done in 1889, and my art analysis of her piece.
The painting is organized simply. The background of the painting is painted in an Impressionist style. The blurring of edges, however, starkly contrasts with the sharp and hard contours of the figure in the foreground. The female figure is very sharp and clear compared to the background. The background paint is thick compared to the thin lines used to paint the figures in the foreground. The thick paint adds to the reduction of detail for the background. The colors used to paint the foreground figures are vibrant, as opposed to the whitened colors of the Impressionist background. The painting is mostly comprised of cool colors but there is a range of dark and light colors. The light colors are predominantly in the background and the darker colors are in the foreground. The vivid color of the robe contrasts with the muted colors of the background, resulting in an emphasis of the robe color. This emphasis leads the viewer's gaze to the focal part of the painting: the figures in the foreground. The female and baby in the foreground take up most of the canvas. The mother’s gaze is met by the child as it reaches out to touch her face. The background is simple, emphasizing the closeness between the mother and child, much like Le Brun’s piece. Additionally, Cassatt’s The Child's Bath, 1893 “with its striking and unorthodox composition, is one of Cassatt’s masterworks” (“The Child's Bath”). Within this composition, she employed the use of unconventional devices such as cropped forms, bold patterns and outlines, and a flattened perspective (“The Child's Bath”). Cassatt utilizes a pastel-like color scheme, exemplifying the delicateness and tenderness between the mother and her bathing child. Her brush strokes are swift and gentle, again, suggesting the passionate, yet soft, love the mother has for her child.
