Kindergarten is a time of exploration and adventure in which an individual begins their educational journey. This first year sets the stage for the academic success and social status of a student for years to come, and a blunder during this time can be detrimental to an individual, especially in regards to the social aspect. If deemed an outcast during this time, especially by a student who has been assigned to the upper caste, it is likely that they will be unable to move up in their system; however, it can be done. In my first few weeks of Kindergarten, things appeared to be going smoothly. Although this system is rigid, it can be manipulated enough to allow some movement if an individual will put in the time and effort it takes to learn how to do this. This movement cannot happen, however, if the person does not realize that this system is not absolute. When an individual is made to believe that they belong somewhere they will often not try to change that. Mike Ross wrote an article entitled “I Just Wanna Be Average” in which he describes his experiences at a vocational school and it’s effects on his motivation and view of himself. In this article, he states that a “student will float to the mark you set” (Ross 185). At this vocational school, he was expected to do poorly because it was decided that he was not intelligent enough to handle regular classes. Because this viewpoint surrounded him, he began to view himself as someone who was less than the average person. He would produce mediocre work and put in as little effort as possible while still maintaining a passing grade. When everyone around an individual believes that they can only be what the social system says they are, it makes it hard for them to imagine that they can be something different. This results in that individual only amounting to what is expected out of them, creating the illusion that these social structures are not only absolute but the only description of a person that is needed in order to assess their value. This can be perpetuated by rumors that are spread about them, making them fall lower in the hierarchy. Then if they try to fight back these rumors will only escalate, which creates a vicious cycle in which many people cannot escape. In this article, Harry Gracey made observations of a kindergarten classroom daily routine. Gracey implied that kindergarten is like boot camp for the entire educational system. It’s geared toward teaching children about learning rules, guidelines, and procedures that they would be expected to follow throughout their academic careers. Students are instructed to appropriately conduct themselves behaviorally and attitudinal for the “student role”, which, Gracey argues is to follow classroom procedures. This article indicates that a rigid social structure in the classroom, a way to successfully control and monitor the kid’s behaviors (Gracey 8).
I observed at St. Eve’s Learning Center location in their preschool room. The center has a naturalistic feel to the environment and all of the staff is friendly and welcoming. The classroom displayed best practices, modern theories and research, and followed expected standards set by their accreditations.
On November 13, 2015 I observed a kindergarten class at the school where I work as the BAC Director. The students were between the ages of 5 and 6 years of age. The student were studying community helpers.
What I learned during the observation is that have a good layout and a good environment setting children are more willing learn and play with the children around them. They need to feel that they are apart of the classroom. That is part of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Need. You environment the classroom need to make children feel safe because if they don’t feel safe they are always going to be on high alert and not pay attached to what going on they are also not going to play or do anything in the classroom. Having the right environment makes it easy for children to explore and learn everything they need have those center or station is not just their for children to have fun and play that because while they are playing and have fun they are learning.
If a kindergartener is slightly more mature and articulate than his classmates because he is many months older, he will be given the more difficult worksheets, which then leads him into the upper level math class, which ultimately leads him to the gifted and honors class.
The book defines temperament as, "an individual's behavioral style and characteristic way of responding." As a baby, I believe I was a difficult child. This means that I often cried and engaged in irregular daily routines. At a young age when my parents were off at work, my grandmother would often babysit me. From stories that I remember both my mother and grandmother telling me, I would also cry when I was not around my mother. I did not let anyone else hold me. This made it very hard for both my mother and grandmother and at times different babysitters. The book mentions that only ten percent of children are classified as difficult. As I grew older I was able to go without having my mother by my side. I can say that I then grew into an easy child. This happened when my parents had another baby and I needed to get used to not have the most attention. There are also stories I have been told that involve me and my younger sister not getting along because I wanted the attention. When I did become an easy child, I would help my mom with helping with my younger sister. At a young age, you could not do much then but I always wanted to try. The link posted above is an educational website that I selected. This website is over the topic of teaching second graders how to successfully learn multiplication. Since second grade is the grade that I intend to teach and Math is the subject I am the worst at, I thought it would be a very helpful website for my future in Elementary Education. There were other sites on the internet that may have helped me as well, but I felt as though this website did not go to into depth on what exactly to do in the classroom, but highlighted main points to remember to illustrate when trying to teach this concept to students. I found it very interesting that the website went as far as to illustrate important vocabulary for the teacher to use while teaching
Parents want the best for their children, and picking where to place them in school is a serious challenge for most. Imagine you are a student again: you walk into class this morning, and instead of seeing desks, you see a class divided into different areas and a big open space. In electing to observe a kindergarten class, I was hoping to see ‘real world’ examples of the social development, personality types and cognitive variation found within the beginning stages of “Middle Childhood” as discussed within our text.
