Grandmother, mother, daughter, sister, aunt: what does the future hold for the women of the world? In 1991 Katha Pollitt had that same question. In an article in The New York Times Pollitt expressed her concerns regarding female role models in the media for the younger generation. “Contemporary shows are either essentially all-male, like Garfield, or organized on what I call the Smurfette principle: a group of male buddies will be accented by a lone female, stereotypically defined” (as cited in Green & Lindsky, 2012, p. 546) Katha Pollitt argues that the television shows children are watching are predominantly male leads, thus leaving girls without suitable role models. But why does a role model for a girl have to be a woman? Over the 25
The media is one of the most powerful tools in people’s lives, since it’s used by many as the medium for the delivery of useful information to diverse audience. Over the past few years, the media landscape has undergone noteworthy developments. Prized information about various cultural groups is often relayed through appropriate media, and it’s interesting to note that blogs are currently being utilized as the best medium for celebrity gossip. Celebrity blogs are usually thronged with readers, who would like to know more about their favorite superstars. The entries of different celebrity gossip blogs are often accompanied by paparazzi photos that are usually meant to trigger a stream of comments based on the readers’ observations, enthusiasm and criticisms.
First of all, in The Simpsons, the scene where we get into the actual plot of the story opens with Marge and Lisa walking into a department store that sells dolls. The gender stereotype that girls are only interested in playing with dolls is reinforced here as a huge selection of Malibu Stacy dolls is on display with a throng of screeching, bloodthirsty girls tearing the store apart. Lisa says, “I’m warning you mom, I might get a little crazy.” and immediately knocks down a girl and snatches another in a choke-hold to be the first in line for the new Malibu Stacy doll. In the very next scene we have the whole family in the car with Homer driving. He is baking a cupcake with an easy-bake-oven that he bought from the mall. Marge advises him that he should not be doing that. The stereotype here is that men are more impulsive as demonstrated by Homer and his baking while driving without any concern of his or his family’s safety; and that women like to play it safe and think before acting as demonstrated by Marge. Another noteworthy observation is the fact that Homer completes his gender stereotype as the bread-winner of the family. He works at the Nuclear power plant while Marge plays the role of the proud homemaker who is rarely seen outside the home and who has little friends. Homer on the other hand, is not confined to his domestic role and his frequently shown at Moe’s Tavern with his friends, at work, or doing something that is stupid and dangerous. This enforces the stereotype that women have few friends and stay close to domestic life whereas men have lots of friends, are more independent, and bring home the bacon. Moreover, Bart and Lisa are in accordance with their gender stereotypes as well. For instance, in the backseat, Ba...
For my interview project, I pick a very unique family that isn’t normal these days. In this family, they have two set of twins that both have a disability. That means, the parents have a total of four children with disabilities in their family. The first set of twins is a two girls that just have mild learning disabilities and the second set is boys that are non-verbal with severe autism. When deciding who to interview, I choose to interview on of the adult sibling Meghan. She is part of the first set of twins with mild learning disbailities. I choose her because I wanted to know her perspective on her family and her brothers with severe special needs. During this interview, I asked Meghan many different kinds of questions relating to her family,
America has one of the largest pregnancy rates in teens in the whole world (“Sexuality, Contraception, and the Media”). Pregnant teens have to make many hard choices. They must decided to keep the baby or not., and to continue on with school. or not. Teens moms can lose everything they’ve worked for after one bad decision. Sex is in teens lives because of media influence.
The celebrification of politicians is not a new phenomena, politicians have been using the media to build up a profile of themselves, a one that they want to portray, for decades. Adolf Hitler used the media to a whole new extent in the 1930s and by many, was seen as a celebrity. In Michael Munn’s Hitler and the Nazi Cult of Celebrity, he likens the hysteria caused by Hitler’s public appearances to the “adolescent frenzy of Beatlemania”(2013: 41). There’s evidence of the celebrification of politicians even in the 1800’s in Chris Rojek’s Celebrity (2001: 143), where Ulysess S Grant visited Newcastle, and 800,000 people lined the streets to greet him, as a celebrity. Even now, the celebrification of politicians is rife, with Boris Johnson being a devout advocate of this tool. The celebrification of politicians is having quite an effect on the public sphere, as some claim decisions are being made on the basis of celebrity and not on political ideologies (Couldry & Markham, 2007) while (Rojek, 2011) believes any widening of the public sphere is a welcome addition. The blurring of lines between what is a celebrity and what is a politician is becoming increasingly hard to decipher as Streets’ Mass Media, Politics and Democracy states “TV schedules and newspapers draw neat boundaries between what is politics and what is entertainment…but this formal distinction between what counts as politics and what does not is sometimes not as clear as it seems.” (Street, 2001 :61) and this is the problem facing the public sphere. Jurgen Habermas defined the public sphere in his 1989 work The Strucutural Transformation of the Public Sphere – An Inquiry Into a Category of Bourgeois Society, as “the sphere of private people who join together to form a ‘...
I have had the distinct pleasure of knowing, for a considerable portion of my life, both of them individually, before knowing them as a couple. The beautiful girl that every boy in our class was madly in love with and the boy from the baseball team, who I didn't like much at the time. Spending time with the two of them is like sl...
Angelina with her new found prominence she began to get in depth attention from the press. Numerous aspects of her personal life became news. At her wedding to her Hackers co-star Jonny Lee Miller, she had displayed her husband’s name on the back of her shirt painted in her own blood. Angelina and Jonny got divorced, and in 2000 she married her pushing Tin co-star Billy Bob Thornton. She had become the fifth wife o...
Fashion models are becoming skinnier, while the average American woman is becoming plumper, and yet the malnourished supermodels with waists that you could wrap a child’s arm around are the prime examples of true beauty – according to today’s society via the media. Media, with the tiny models, the slender celebrities, and the idea that skinny is sexy is practically, yet sometimes unintentionally, creating eating disorders in the lives of young, insecure girls that cannot fully comprehend what they are doing to their selves. Social media along with the fashion and film industries are just a few outlets inadvertently encouraging eating disorders.
It's clear to see the media focuses on various reports, television shows, and even sitcoms regarding all forms of psychology. While watching television one can say media basically relies on psychology. The media of psychology views psychology through means of common sense versus an actual science. Psychology is the scientific study of behavior and mental processed. Behavior is anything you do that can be observed. In the media we can observe people through the television screen. Through our observations we learn from their behavior. For example in a famous experiment conducted by Albert Bandura called, "Bobo Doll Experiment," a preschool child is working on a drawing. An adult in another part of the room is building with Tinkertoys. The child is watching this adult through a television screen and watches as the adult gets up and for nearly ten minutes pounds, kicks, and throws around the room a large inflated Bobo doll, while yelling hurtful sayings such as, "Sock him in the nose" or "Hit him down" and even "Kick him". After the adult was done, the child was taken to another room and demonstrated the same actions as they have seen through the television screen to the Bobo Doll. It's clear to see from the experiment the media teaches society many aspects of psychology. From a psychological aspect we see a child observing violent behavior from what the media has presented. Humans learn through observation and in a world where technology is advancing, the media plays a large role.
