In the book Bad Indians, Miranda talks about the many issues Indigenous People go through. Miranda talks about the struggles Indigenous people go through; however, she talks about them in the perspective of Native Americans. Many people learn about Indigenous People through classrooms and textbooks, in the perspective of White people. In Bad Indians, Miranda uses different literary devices to show her perspective of the way Indigenous People were treated, the issues that arose from missionization, as well as the violence that followed through such issues. Bad Indians is an excellent example that shows how different history is told in different perspectives.

The Seneca Falls Convention took place in Seneca Falls, New York on July 19th and 18th in 1848. The convention was held to address the condition of women in the United States. Approximately three hundred women, including 40 men participants, showed for the convention. This convention marked the beginning of the women’s rights movement that would last for several years to come.
Throughout history, women have struggled with, and fought against oppression. They have been held back and weighed down by the sexist ideas of a male dominated society which has controlled cultural, economic and political ideas and structure. During the mid-1800’s to early 1900’s women became more vocal and rebuked sexism and the role that had been defined for them. Fighting with the powerful written word, women sought a voice, equality amongst men and an identity outside of their family. In many literary writings, especially by women, during the mid-1800’s to early 1900’s, we see symbols of oppression and the search for gender equality in society. Writing based on their own experiences, had it not been for the works of Susan Glaspell, Kate Chopin, and similar feminist authors of their time, we may not have seen a reform movement to improve gender roles in a culture in which women had been overshadowed by men.
According to Charles G. Finney, the role of the church is to reform society (Doc. B). In 1834, he said, "When the churches are...awakened and reformed, the reformation and salvation of sinners will follow." Finney had been influenced by Second Great Awakening ideals. He goes on to say that "drunkards, harlots, and infidels" would also be converted do to reform by the church. In this sense, the Second Great Awakening helped expand democratic ideals by bettering the moral standards of the common man. In 1835, Another example of democratic growth can be shown by Document C, where Patrick Reason created an engraving depicting a black female slave in chains and shackles. Above her is the quote, Am I not a woman and a sister?' This reflects how the abolition and women's movements often tied into one another since both of these movements helped expand democratic ideals in that they desired increased rights, such as suffrage for minorities. For example, The Grimke sisters, Angelina and Sarah were southern abolitionists who also played a role in the Women's Movement.
As the years dragged on in the new nation the roles of men and women became more distinct and further apart for one another. Women were not allowed to go anywhere in public without an escort, they could not hold a position in office let allow vote, and they could only learn the basics of education (reading, writing, and arithmetic). In law the children belonged to the husband and so did the wife’s property and money. The only job women could think about having was being a ‘governess’ which would give other women education.

During the Republican Era women were responsible in increasing the literacy amongst young boys and girls. Although, female academies did not provide extensive curriculum as the universities males attended, the creation of schools for young women was by far a big step towards reaching equality. With Andrew Jackson as president, he extended voting rights to all white males. Before his election, the ability to vote was primarily for the land owning, wealthy white males. By extending the voting privilege, it further led to the growth of the need for women’s rights. If poor white males could vote, then wealthy white females should be able to vote as well, sought the women’s rights activists. After a couple of elections, Abraham Lincoln becomes president and encompasses the free-labor ideal, in which hard work is the key to becoming wealthy. In the 1830’s mills were created, where women worked in textile factories. For once, women were able to descend from domestic routine and be able to have wages. However, women began to realize that without being able to own property or being able to vote left them behind everybody else even if they worked twice as hard as everybody else. With females like the Grimké sisters, women became knowledgeable about women’s limited ability to grow as citizens. David McCullough author of 1776 puts faces and feelings to the events of the Revolutionary war making this an exciting novel even when the ending is known. Acting as a companion to an earlier work of McCullough’s, John Adams, 1776 is a strictly military view of the era versus political. Although the reader may have to get accustomed to the vast amount of characters introduced McCullough makes sure that those you are supposed to remember you will. Every character introduced is described incredibly well and throughout the novel you begin to feel as if you know the character and are going through the battle with them, specifically General George Washington with whom the reader emphasizes constantly with throughout the war. With the great description of the characters and events we feel as if we are there and in doing this the author creates understanding, the reader by knowing all sides and characters’ personalities the feels they know why the Revolution happened the way it did.

It is a primary source, as long as its author for the first time opens the secrets of the revolutionary movement, which started in 1848 from the convention held by Lucretia Mott and Elizabeth Stanton. It is not a secondary source, as long as information from the book appears for the first time. Stanton did not reveal much in her memoirs, so the author had to work hard to bring this information on the surface. The convention changed the course of history by starting protecting women’s rights and enhancing overall gender equality. The book is a reflection of women’s activity in the name of their freedom and rights equality during fifty years. The book is significant both to the present and to the past time, as long as there are many issues in the society related to the women’s rights, and to the time studied in the class.

Women have overcome oppression through activism and garnered more rights since the termination of the Realist literary era.
Angelina Grimke wrote a number of letters, addressed to Catherine Beecher, in response to Beecher’s An Essay on Slavery and Abolitionism with Reference to the Duty of American Females. Letter XII is titled “Human Rights Not Founded on Sex” and explicitly expresses Grimke’s views regarding female rights. Grimke’s choice of the letter format as a vehicle for her argument establishes a personal connection with the reader—though the letter is addressed to Beecher, the “you” is rather ambiguous and can certainly be read as a larger audience. A letter evokes images of continued correspondence, creating a more conversational and open-ended feeling to the piece than a traditional essay. Just like Las Casas, Angelina Grimke and her sister Sarah are two very famous women that created history together. While Bartolome De Las Casas changed the Latin Community forever, these sisters changed the way Anti-Slavery was protested. They not only wanted to free the enslaved, but they wanted to end discrimination throughout the United States. The Grimke sisters were not just famous for their avocation against slavery, they were also among the first abolitionists to acknowledge the importance of women’s rights. These two icons were not separate from the other advocates because of their declamatory and legendary talents, nor their never-ending assurance of the causes of racial and gender equality. It was their first-hand experience within the institution of slavery. Other known enthusiasts such as the editor of “Liberator” William Lloyd Garrison and Theodore Weld (Angelina’s husband) could give a breathtaking speech on their ambitions to end slavery but they’re not able to testify to the impact on African Americans or their masters from personal knowledge.
