Recommended: Solution to bullying in school

The Man with the Drums What does it take for a student to find their aspiration? Freaks and Geeks accurately portrays the stereotypes of high schoolers; All of their actions, and people that are around them will influence how they evolve. Many students have their different ways of going on with their lives, but what they do also affects everything else around them for the better or the worst.
In Freaks and Geeks, we see an everyday nerd named Sam, a fellow who wears striped shirts everyday, and wears pants like he’s about to attend a business meeting. He is also well known for his typical mouth breathing, and bed head hair everyday. Like every other nerd, Sam has to deal with bullies. Everyday he will get picked on and he’s always looking for someone else to take the heat for him. Lindsey, for example, is one of those people. Not the type to go face to face with reality, she cloaks herself in a big jacket so she can hide from the world. Originally known for being the smartest kid in school, she doesn 't want to be seen as the smartest anymore. The confusion she is facing causes her to push her friends; and family away, Leaving her vulnerable to poor decisions. To try and makes herself feel better she tries to become friends with the “cool kids”. These “cool kids”, are known for their bad habits of smoking, doing drugs, and treating others poorly. While she seemed to become more confused about her own image, a friend realizes her issue and decides to help her seek what she desires. Lindseys friend Nick, introduces her into his drumset. He explains, “it 's my drum kit. This my passion. This is the essence of who I am now. But before I had this, I was lost too.” When she heard this she understood that she needed to find her own drum kit. The Man with the drums evolved, into the person that she will

    The Geeks Shall Inherit The Earth is a book by Alexandra Robbins which summarizes the story of seven different teenagers that have many different problems, which many of todays teenagers also have. I found myself having many similarities to the teenagers in the story, for example, when with her group Whitney, the popular bitch, thinks “You didn't day that when we were alone, but now that you're in front of a group you do” (Robbins 21). I can relate to this because I feel as though many people are pressured to say or do things they normally wouldn't whenever they are with their group or ‘clique’. Robbins has this idea that the freaks and geeks, or “cafeteria fringe” will someday grow up and use what they are criticized for to become more successful than the other peopler people. She calls this the ‘Quirk Theory’ (Robbins page 11). This helped me to learn that right now, in high school, not being ‘popular’ may seem like the end of the world, but the reality of it is that after these four years, it wont even matter, but what will be important is how you learned to grow as a person and the true friendships that were made. This makes me want to focus more on my education and learning to grow as a person instead of focusing on how many friends I have or who I sit with at lunch, because truthfully it wont matter once high school is over.

    The world of young adults is a complicated landscape, with cliques and a desire to fit in. This push for conformity stretches not only through behavior, but more noticeably through the apparel worn by youths. At the beginning of the story, the narrator states that she and her friends are in “trouble,” but they “do not know what [they did], and [they are] sure [they] did not mean to do it” (103). This fear of the unknown continues throughout the entirety of the story, and readers can infer that the crime the girls have committed was simply dressing out of the norm for their age. The narrator also mentions that she is “white-skinned, ebony-haired, red-lipped, and ethereal,” far different than the expectation for her being “suntanned, golden-haired, peach-lipped, and earthbound” like her mother had been (103). As time repeats itself, so too do the fashion trends popular among the masses, and the look that the narrator’s mother portrayed was the same as the look her daughter is expected to adhere to. This is not the case, though, and because of her and her band’s choices in clothes, the narrator feels ostracized by not only her peers but her father as well, who “looks at [them] without moving his mouth or turning his head” as they leave the house (104). This reaction, or lack thereof, indicates that the father disapproves of the choices his daughter has made about how she dresses, but feels as though it is not his place to criticize her. The ending line does an excellent job at summarizing the angst felt by most teens as the narrator and her band feel as though “[they] are right to turn [themselves] in” to the pressures exerted by their peers to comply to what is expected of them (104).     When the “decently dressed” Lengel tried to tell the girls to be “decently dressed” because the girls were wearing “bathing suits”, the girls first argued they “are decent” and left because the girls thought what they were doing was not wrong since they have different perspective than Lengel. The result of feeling empathy for the younger generation in "Railway Club Blues" is that the older generation saw the younger generation as themselves and the protagonist mentioned that teens were the “Strange children of the simple punks we were”. Also, despite of the younger teens “clothes are odd [and] their attitudes obscure”, the protagonist saw their faces that gave him “a kindred memory” of how the teens “repeat the ancient dance”. Ultimately, because the two generations were able to enjoyed a small jazz performance together, the protagonist felt “all cardboard boundaries are erased.”. Both authors used contrast to show the results of feeling empathy for the younger generation, and in “A&P”, the result of Lengel feeling empathy for the teenagers is that he was rejected by the youth due to their contrasting perspectives.
