This essay will argue that the statement “Cordwainer Smith’s story, ‘Alpha Ralpha Boulevard’, is an existentialist text,” is incorrect because Alpha Ralpha Boulevard exhibits elements that do not correlate with existentialist philosophy. The term existentialist, according to Sartre, means existence precedes essence. This means that an individual first exists, and then they exercise free will over themselves to do things that define themselves, thus their essence. For this ideology to work for Sartre, an atheistic stance needs to be taken. This is so because of how he defines God. God is compared to an artisan producing a knife, through a definition and a formula. Thus, “when God creates he knows precisely what he is creating.” Under this identification of God, that Sartre dictates is a common implication in philosophical writings, God creates with intent and seemingly, purpose. It predicted that Macht would live or die with a brown-haired girl who was already betrothed. It turns out that the journey on Alpha Ralpha Boulevard to help Virginia, a brown haired girl, costs him his life. This could be simply coincidental; however I doubt these coincidental details would be incorporated of for other purposes. Virginia’s aunt received the prediction “Paul and Virginia,” twelve years prior to this point, the day they fall in love. Once they reach the Abba-Dingo the meteorological machine predicts a typhoon coming, which soon appeared. The machine offered no food/help, yet its compartment labeled “predictions” worked. It gave Virginia the prediction that she would love Paul for all her life, and Paul that he would love her for twenty one more minutes. Paul dismisses it, believing that like the food machine, the prediction’s machine was broken. It turns out that it was indeed correct, Virginia dies twenty one minutes later, and Paul is knocked unconscious, waking up no longer in love with his deceased
