Clash of the Titans: Hero’s Journey The Hero’s Journey has been a staple of film and literature throughout the ages. It involves a soon to be hero following a defined narrative that will take him from the ordinary to the extraordinary as he answers his call to adventure. He will put common sense and self-doubt aside to find the hero inside of him. The 2010 film, the Clash of the Titans directed by Louis Leterrier, borrows from Greek mythology to tell the tale of Perseus, a lowly fisherman whose hero’s journey includes discovering his true nature, avenging his family and saving the city of Argos from the wrath of Hades. Perseus, like most heroes, begins his journey in the ordinary world. He is content as a fisherman, living and working with his adopted family. He knows exactly where he belongs and it is with his family. Perseus’ call to adventure comes when Hades kills his family and threatens Argos with the Kraken if Andromeda is not sacrificed. Hades also reveals that Perseus is a demigod, the son of Zeus. Following the Hero narrative, Perseus at first not only refuses the call but also refuses to believe he is a demigod. Denying his true self, the reality he must come to accept at the end of his journey. The next step in the Hero’s Journey involves help from a mentor. He must enter the innermost cave where he will challenge and defeat Medusa using the shield crafted for him by the hunters. When he leaves the cave with Medusa’s head, the elixir, he is met by Io. Calibos returns and is defeated by Perseus who was forced to use the sword given to him by Zeus, a sign he is beginning to acknowledge his true self. Perseus is again faced with a choice to continue with his journey or stay with Io who is dying. Fortunately for Argos, that choice was made for him when Io turns to a yellow mist and fades
