In the poem “Cartoon Physics, part 1” by Nick Flynn, children are idealistic and naive in their beliefs, however knowledge causes their views to change. The author uses many literary elements to help the audience understand the theme. Firstly, Flynn uses imagery to portray the theme of youth’s idealism. For example, he writes “where they can be heroes. You can run/ back into a burning house, sinking ship”(15-16). It would be nearly impossible for someone, let a lone a ten year old child, to save all of the passengers on a sinking ship. One can imagine the immense ability required to overcome the violent waves and the great distances required to swim in order to save all these people on the ship. However, this is unfathomable to a child.
In the story, "Cherry Bomb" by Maxine Clair the author uses many literary devices to characterize the adult narrator’s memories of her fifth-grade summer world. One of the literary devices used constantly in the passage was imagery. Imagery is used to give readers insight of how summer felt to the fifth-grader of the story and helps understand the tone of the adult. “Life was measured in summers then, and the expression “I am in this world, but not of it” appealed to me. I wasn’t sure what it meant, but it had just the right ring for a lofty statement I should adopt” (Line 4-7). This quote from the passage best represents how the adult memories are reflected to the summer of her fifth-grade self. This passage gives imagery to the readers of a naïve character who believes everything that is said to her. The quote also let us know that
...the future to see that his life is not ruined by acts of immaturity. And, in “Araby”, we encounter another young man facing a crisis of the spirit who attempts to find a very limiting connection between his religious and his physical and emotional passions. In all of these stories, we encounter boys in the cusp of burgeoning manhood. What we are left with, in each, is the understanding that even if they can’t see the light at the end of the tunnel, we can. These stories bind all of us together in their universal messages…youth is something we get over, eventually, and in our own ways, but we cannot help get over it.

Through what is essentially known as escaping reality, children such as the character Max can further bring themselves to understand what they are feeling by unconsciously thinking about it in an imaginative way. Projecting certain personalities into characters in a way that accurately relates to Max is a prosperous way to develop a reassured idea in his life, between himself and the relationships around him. No matter race, background or time period, every child goes through the drastic change from childhood to adulthood that we know of as “coming of age.” Since the topic of coming of age is so widespread and relatable, it is a very common theme in novels. In fact, many American classics follow the archetype known as loss of innocence, which displays the change in views and values of a child during this time period. Childhood is hard enough how it is, but during certain time periods and in certain locations, it can be exceptionally difficult; an example of this stressed hardship is the Deep South during the times of segregation and The Great Depression. One American classic that follows this archetype is To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee; in this narrative, she shows a dramatic change in Scout and Jem’s understanding of courage and empathy with the help of their father, Atticus, as they mature in the Deep South.
A reoccurring theme in these novels is the maturation of children. “To Kill a Mockingbird” we watch Jem and Scout mature into individual beings with a deep understanding of the world. In this book we can observe how personal experiences throughout our childhood mould and shape our being. In “The Joy Luck Club” we can experience the unique background each character has and learn how that background helped mould them into the beings they are today. In “The Catcher in the Rye,” we are likewise taken through Holden’s childhood and maturation. In “Huckleberry Finn,” Huck’s growing up is also an important part of the book. Growing up is a difficult task. This is true especially Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird. Using many examples of the loss of childhood innocence, Lee shows us that a corrupted society leads to growing up faster and one’s childhood being stripped away. Through Jem, the eldest of the Finch children, and Scout, the youngest, the readers see how a trial in 1930s Alabama takes a toll on young minds. Jem and Scout grow up more than expected when their summer consists of nothing but a racist trial. In Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird, she implies that growing up leads to loss of innocence, especially in troubling times.
Growing up is a natural part of life. Everyone grows up. The loss of childish innocence and blind faith in what is said is one chief mark of growing up. Loss of innocence, however, presents itself in many forms, even to adults, and with it brings a greater understanding of the world at large. The adult world is a cold and terrifying place. There are robberies, shootings, murders, suicides, and much more. If you were to be a small child, perhaps age 5, and you were to look in at this world, you would never know how bad it actually was, just from a single glance. Children have a small slice of ignorant bliss, which helps to keep them away from the harsh of reality. It isn’t until later, when they encounter something that opens their eyes and shows them, that they truly start to understand the world we live it. Everyone remembers their childhood, how they used to play around every single day, carefree and untroubled. One can remember playing in the mud and carelessly, curious and naively. One can also remember living in their own little world, deaf to the world and issues around him or her. It is something everyone wants to last, but it slips by as quickly as time passes. It is what as known as childhood innocence, the barrier shielding children from the harsh realities of the world around them. The loss of innocence is a stage in life everyone has to pass, which takes place after a significant event in one’s life that destroys their bright and happy views. As highlighted in Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, all children are born innocent and care free, but it is inevitable that the innocence will be stripped away as they grow older and are susceptible to the world’s harsh realities. This theme is visible throughout the entire novel, but it is most prevalent in the society in which they live in, the racism that the children are exposed to, and their realization of the true world around them.
In a typical family, there are parents that expected to hear things when their teenager is rebelling against them: slamming the door, shouting at each other, and protests on what they could do or what they should not do. Their little baby is growing up, testing their wings of adulthood; they are not the small child that wanted their mommy to read a book to them or to kiss their hurts away and most probably, they are thinking that anything that their parents told them are certainly could not be right. The poem talks about a conflict between the author and her son when he was in his adolescence. In the first stanza, a misunderstanding about a math problem turns into a family argument that shows the classic rift between the generation of the parent and the teenager. Despite the misunderstandings between the parent and child, there is a loving bond between them. The imagery, contrasting tones, connotative diction, and symbolism in the poem reflect these two sides of the relationship.
The illusion of innocence is deeply instilled in the outlook of children. Reality soon takes its grip as kids begin to grow and mature, and they lose their pure qualities that they have once possessed. Their father Atticus shelters Jem and Scout from the town’s disease, teaching them the act of sympathy and how to distinguish the good aspects over glaring at the imperfections of people. As the boys witness death and mutilation all around them, any preconceived notion about the indoctrination, "the enemy" and the "rights and wrongs" of the conflict disappear, leaving them angry and perplexed. The story is not about heroism but about toil and futility and the divide between the idea of war and the real life and its values. It is not a surprise that Dr. Seuss received an award for a “Lifetime of Contribution to Children’s Literature”. His work will be read and enjoyed for decades to come. All in all, no matter which Dr. Seuss story that the reader might select, his or her imagination will be sparked, and the reader will surely be entertained.
