Didactic Reliance on Technology: Analysis of “August 2026: There Will Come Soft Rain” and “The Machine Stops”
Use of technology is expanding from day to day, more things in life are depending on machinery. Machines are meant to bring us a comfortable life, and technology is meant to enhance our living standard, yet. Half a century ago, Ray Bradbury issued an enlightenment in the short story “August 2026: There Will Come Soft Rain”. In E. M. Forster’s “The Machine Stops”, a similar enlightenment is made. Both edify people that things will go wrong when technology is dominant over humanity; our dependence on technology lead people lost humanity, lead people lost control of human creation, and eventually lead humanity to devastate. In both stories, however, edify human over dependency on technology lead to dismiss basic living skills, oust humanity, and eventually lead to mankind devastate. Bradbury and Forster both accentuate the absurd life, colourless generation, and mindlessness world we may end up when technology is dominant over humanity, when machine is controlling our lives. Bradbury writes, “…even as the sun rose to shine upon the heaped rubble and steam (Bradbury 4)”, after the fire accidence destroys the house, the sun still rises. The rising sun is an allusion to rebirth, and a new start, which implies chances for human. Similarly, Forster writes, “Humanity has learnt its lesson. (Forster 26)” Through both stories, Bradbury and Forster guide people to revaluate the meaning of human values, and humanity in our lives, reconsider the depth of technology should plant in our living, and remember the meaning of truly
Technology has been around as long as people have and has been advancing ever since. It is the reason that we have access to the miraculous tools that we do today. From the forks that we eat our supper with to the cars that get us from place to place technology is everywhere. However, with technology advancing at such a rapid pace, it could pose a threat to our future society. In the short stories “Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut and “By the Waters of Babylon” by Stephen Vincent Benet, the authors describe how bleak society could become if we do not take precautions when using technology.
The extinction of the people by nuclear war proven from the white silhouettes on the burned side of the house. The house’s recognition and allowance of certain animals inside proves the house’s possible self-consciousness. The poem read by a voice possibly explaining the author’s thoughts on nature, technology, and the human race. The destruction of the house by fire and it’s symbolic meaning of the death of the human race. The lone voice of the one last wall standing and it’s symbolic meaning of the house’s mindlessness. In Ray Bradbury’s " There Will Come Soft Rains, " he fabricates a story with two themes about the end of the world. The first theme is that humans are so reliant on technology, that it leads the destruction of the world, and the second theme is that a world without humans would be peaceful, however no one would be able to enjoy it. Bradbury uses literary devices, such as narrative structure, personnification, and pathos to effectively address human extinction. Ray Bradbury wrote two very distinctly different novels in the early Cold War era. The first was The Martian Chronicles (1950) and Fahrenheit 451 (1953) followed. The thematic similarities of Mars coupled with the state of the American mindset during the Cold War era entwine the two novels on the surface. Moreover, Bradbury was “preventing futures” as he stated in an interview with David Mogen in 1980. A dystopian society was a main theme in both books as well, but done in a juxtapositions manner that makes the reader aware of Bradbury’s optimism in the stories. A society completely frightened by a nuclear bomb for example will inevitably become civil to one another. Bradbury used his life to formulate his writing, from his views of people, to the books he read and this has been identified by critics such as: Paradowski, Buchenberger, Hoskinson et al. Bradbury used science fantasy to critique humans themselves and the frontiersmen attitude of destroying the very beauty they find by civilizing it. This annotated bibliography explores Hoskinson’s essay as a cynosure, showing the similarities of the novels’ themes and how they lead to the, “There Will Come Soft Rains” autonomous house and its final moments as it is taken over by fire.
Have you ever had the thought that technology is becoming so advanced that someday we might not be able to think for ourselves? There is no questioning the fact that we live in a society that is raging for the newest technology trends. We live in a society that craves technology so much that whenever a new piece of technology comes out, people go crazy to get their hands on it. The stories that will be analyzed are The Time Machine by H.G Wells and The Veldt by Ray Bradbury. These stories offer great insight into technologies’ advancements over time that will ultimately lead to the downfall of human beings. Bradbury’s use of personification in “There Will Come Soft Rains” also exemplifies the intricate relationship between humans and technology. For instance, he writes, “At ten o’clock the house began to die” (Bradbury 4). When the house truly starts to die, the readers begin to feel confused because everything it has done has been entirely methodical. The houses aspiration to save itself joint with the dying noises evokes human sorrow and suffering. The demolition of the personified house might convey the readers to sense the deep, penetrating grief of the situation, whereas a clear, detailed portrayal of the death of a human being might merely force readers to recoil in horror. Throughout his text, Suzuki continuously endorses the idea that technologies have far greater negative impacts than positive and are hardly worth the risk. Albert Borgmann follows the general project by Heidegger to see how technology has harmful effects on humanity and to determine how it can be reformed. Borgmann shares Heidegger’s view that modern technology is starkly different from premodern technology in its pattern of disclosing the world to human beings. Borgmann agrees that a sort of ethical reform must be undertaken to limit technological ways of living from dominating the lives of individuals and to keep technology in its place. Technology, as represented in his works, often displays human pride and foolishness (Wolfe). “In all of these stories, technology, backed up by philosophy and commercialism, tries to remove the inconveniences, difficulties, and challenges of being human and, in its effort to improve the human condition, impoverishes its spiritual condition” (Bernardo). Ray Bradbury’s use of technology is common in Fahrenheit 451, “The Veldt,” and The Martian Chronicles.
Ray Bradbury is a well-known author for his outstanding fictional works. The futuristic story begins by familiarizing the reader with this house that can do pretty much anything a normal family would do, such as cook, clean, and read. Every hour a mechanical voice box stops to announce the date, weather, or event that is happening at that particular time. “There Will Come Soft Rains” is arranged chronologically, giving the effect that everything is in order, but the more you read the more you realize it’s not. In this book, Forster is able to portray a reality that could become true if we, human beings, keep depending on technology for survival. Although it is very distressing that people became dependable to the Machine to the extent where they loose their humanity and become like a machine as well, with no mind of their own. It is incredible how people were not able to survive when the Machine stopped working; it is understandable that people nowadays will also have a hard time surviving without technology since we were born into a technological world. But the World will be well when people like Kuno remind humans what is really important in life.
Technology turns into something new everyday. From computers to smartphones, technology comes in all shapes and sizes. Most people hope to receive new advancements from technology to do more activities for them. This is not in the best interest for mankind. In Ray Bradbury’s three short stories The Veldt, The Pedestrian, and August 2026, Bradbury describes three different worlds, where he shows the possible outcome of the world if technology advances too far. Each story leads to negative effects on humans and the worlds that they live in. Technology does not have all of the solutions to present day solutions.
Bradbury attacks loss of literature in the society of Fahrenheit 451 to warn our current society about how literature is disappearing and the effects on the people are negative. While Montag is at Faber’s house, Faber explains why books are so important by saying, “Do you know why books such as this are so important? Because they have quality. And what does the word quality mean? To me it means texture. This book has pores” (79). Faber is trying to display the importance of books and how without them people lack quality information. In Electronics and the Decline of Books by Eli Noam it is predicted that “books will become secondary tools in academia, usurped by electronic media” and the only reason books will be purchased will be for leisure, but even that will diminish due to electronic readers.
