Also, when diving the diver must take into account the amount of time spent descending and ascending in the water. If the diver descends too quickly the pressure can deflate their lungs and cause problems. In recreational scuba diving there is a laundry list of available equipment to fit nearly every underwater need. One of the most important pieces of equipment a recreational diver uses is the BCD or buoyancy control device. The BCD is an adjustable inflation vest worn by a diver to increase or decrease their buoyancy during a dive. The BCD is hooked to the regulator or “Octopus” which serves as a junction point for air accessories. The BCD usually comes complete with safety features like an emergency dump valve. Safety features like these help to prevent BCD malfunctions, such as runaway accents, by allowing the diver to release the air out of the vest. Attached to the regulator along with the BCD are air pressure gauges and two breathing apparatuses. One breathing apparatus is used for normal breathing function and the other is set in a known location in the case of an emergency or disorientation. The purpose of a mask is to hide everything that is wrong by not showing it in the slightest. Not even that makes anything better for the mask user and will NOT solve anything for them. A short-term solution will not solve a long-term problem and can make the situation worse. Characters like Avis in the novel “We Are Called To Rise” use a variety of masks to hide the variety of problems in their lives. In the novel, Laura McBride uses Avis and their use of an emotional avoidance mask to demonstrate that she purposely hides how she really feels by showing no strength or emotion.
This breathing apparatus is worn on the backs of firemen providing them with adequate air to get their job done effectively. These devices were not very effective at first. “Some tales say firemen would grow out beards and soak them in water. While in the fire they would breathe into their beards to use as a filter” (Hasenmeier, 2008 para. 6). Firemen then started to use rebreathers which were adopted from similar miner’s equipment used in the early 1920’s (Lee & Meyer, 2000). This design failed because of how fragile they were and how complex they were to control. In the 1970’s they started a design that is like the ones used today. In 1982 NFPA, National Fire Protection Agency, set the standard which required all tanks to have at least 100 liters of positive airflow per minute for 30 minutes (Lee & Meyer, 2000). Today, firefighters use a light weight and ergonomically designed SCBA in conjunction with a full-face mask. An interesting feature of the SCBA that was standardized by the NFPA is PASS, which stands for personal alert safety system. If a fireman becomes unconscious or stops moving for a designated amount of time it sounds a loud tone that helps others locate the fireman in distress (2008).
