“A Scandal in Bohemia” the first of many Sherlock Holmes short stories. It was written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and was first published in 1891. It 's a story that involves the beautiful Ms. Irene Adler, an extremely cunning and smart woman as Sherlock Holmes adversary and The King of Bohemia a foolish ex-lover of Ms. Irene Adler as Sherlock Holmes client. Dr. Watson said it better when he described how Sherlock Holmes sees and feels about Ms. Irene Adler: “To Sherlock Holmes she is always THE woman. I have seldom heard him mention her under any other name. In his eyes she eclipses and predominates the whole of her sex” (Doyle 1). Ms. Irene Adler uses a different form of disguise when she disguises her intended use of the photograph and letters of her and the King 's former love affair. Ms. Irene Adler sent messages to the King of Bohemia stating her intention to reveal their former love affair. Ms. Irene Adler never intends to use the photograph or letters against The King and yet she sent messages to the King of Bohemia threatening to reveal the former love affair between the two. Instead, Ms. Irene Adler intended to use the photograph and letters to match wits with the world 's greatest detective Sherlock Holmes, which she was informed if the King of Bohemia would hire anyone it would surely be Sherlock Holmes. Dr. Watson disguises his character by dressing up and playing a common street folk outside the home of Ms. Irene Adler. This strays as Dr. Watson does not normally dress in or use any form of disguises in other Sherlock Holmes stories. Ms. Irene Adler disguises her intended use of the photograph and letters. The story strays from the standards of Sherlock Holmes stories by the use of letters as well as Ms. Irene Adler disguising of her intent. Normally The client never sends a letter to Sherlock Holmes warning him they are coming by his home and the Sherlock Holmes story “A Scandal in Bohemia” is the only Sherlock Holmes story that has a woman outwit Sherlock Holmes.
