Lorraine Hansberry’s play A Raisin In The Sun, looks at the life of a typical African American family. The play takes place sometime after world war two, when African Americans were not treated fairly. In an interview with New York Times, Hansberry stated the purpose of the play was to “show the many gradations of even one Negro family, the clash of the old and the new, but most of all the unbelievable courage of the Negro people”. Hansberry does just as she intended, each of the family members were in different stages of life, which causes conflict between the new and old generations, but still they remain courageous during times of oppression. Lena is old fashioned in her way of thinking, while her kids think in terms of now. There was a difference in opinions about money and religion between the two groups. Lena grew up in a time when religion, and god was the answer to everything. When in need they prayed, and when things were going well; thanks to God was given. On the other hand Beneatha did not feel the same, she felt what she was able to accomplish in life was not because of God. There was also conflict between Lena and Walter Lee, due to the different mindsets. Walter Lee felt that money was life, the reason for happiness and lack of money caused their hardships. While Lena felt that, as African American freedom was life, she grew up in a time that she feared being lynched, and money was not the main goal of life. Walter Lee still goes on to suggest that the world has always been about money, but African Americans did not have that worry because they had no money. For Walter money was the truest freedom, he could become a man, a boss and provide for his family without submitting to white people. Lena and Walter Lee never came to the same conclusion, so the money that Lena received caused tension between the mother and
