The common theme found through reading various pieces of Scottish literature is the reality that comes to life. The pages of artistic work the writers put forth are astounding. The literature has a beating heart of its’ own. The venues that audiences explore will allow them to see exactly this point. The poetry is designed to fluently glide through Scottish history. Then when readers connect the verse to the short stories they will become aware of the in-depth quality that reflects the important aspects of life. Lastly, when the novel is introduced it will summarize the feeling that the Scottish put themselves and those around them into the works. Another venue is able to accomplish this goal as well. The short stories give readers a sense of life among the pages of the book as well. “A Far Cry From Bowmore” is an excellent piece that captures the audiences’ attention.
This short story is enthralling in that the irony of the protagonists makes the plot interesting to readers. The short story is also an example of the reality shining through literature by the believable characters and their struggles. The man in the story obviously does not want to go to see this dying man. He claims to not know him well enough to site by the man’s death bed. However, circumstances allow for his heart to change and an opportunity for the man to pay him a visit. He has a conversation with the strange dying man about Bowmore.
When the man does die, audiences are left with an empty feeling. When reading literature people always hope for the happily ever after they were told about as children. However, when that expectation is not met and reality is similar to that it resounds within our souls. “Silk Both Sides” is similar to that in which the story ends in an unexpected way for the readers. This short story allows audiences to peruse the notion that traveling is not what life is about. While, it may be fun to have adventures from time to time it certainly will make your life flash before your eyes. The short story presses for audiences to prioritize their life and what morals to follow rather than blindly following a map of the world around.
Also, in the short story “Street of the Three Terraces” readers experience the discontentment that is present in that society. While many people come from different walks of life, everyone can be affected by a single tragedy. Life makes people experience a wide variety of emotions. Life makes people dodge different hurdles. However, life and literature can bring us all together in some way. The Scottish short stories mentioned previously are prime examples of how the writers are successful. However, if one looks more closely at “The Tell-Tale Heart” and “the Pit and Pendulum” one sees otherwise; while both clearly express the impending nature of death through different symbols and imagery, both subtly show that even when life is filled with darkness, there is always light, showing that while Poe was a dark and troubled man, he was always hopeful something positive was going to occur.
