This paper presents an analysis of Earnest Hemingway's short story "Cat in the Rain". In this story, we can see symbolism of a cat to portray the deteriorating marriage of a couple who has different personalities and the love and compassion that the wife longs for. The story starts off with George and his wife stuck in a hotel while it is pouring rain outside. The wife notices a cat that is hiding under a table, trying to avoid getting wet. She suddenly becomes obsessed with the idea of saving this cat. As the story progresses, the audience begins to learn more about the couple and their relationship. As the hotel keeper helps the wife by sending her an umbrella while she is out in the rain, treats her with the respect she deserves and eventually sends the cat to her door, George, the husband, ignores her desires and treats her as if she was a little girl of no importance. One can clearly see the relationship is unhealthy and that the wife is keeping her frustration the herself.
The story presents a theme of the problems relationships have, when one partner becomes dominant or repressive and the other is trying to change and improve the situation. ...he realizes somebody cares about her; the padrone made an effort to please her, and that is a blip of light in her sad and lonely life. The cat was not brought to her by the padrone himself; she is a married woman and an act like that might seem arrogant. The maid arrives to the room with the present, a small present that has a much deeper meaning; the maid holds the cat, "pressed tight against her and swung down against her body." Like a baby. Hemingway built the story in a way that makes the reader sympathize with the wife's need for warmth and affection, so the ending brings peace and consolations not only to the wife, but to the reader as well. The ending restates the message of the story; it has a flat plot with characters who their names we do not know, what makes the reader sympathize with it, as it relates to one’s everyday life and concerns.
