An Inside Look at Modern Seaports

A seaport is a crossing point between several modes of transportation. It can therefore be referred to as a center of combined modes of transport. It is a point where transportation routes on land and sea meet. A port is also where the exchange of goods and passengers take place between ships and land transportation vehicles. A modern seaport is a supper – harbor. It is a deep water port that assists in handling the largest tankers and transportation methods. These seaports are controlled by harbor masters. The harbor masters control them from a high-tech control room fitted with radar, satellites feeds and advanced computers that use complex tracking software. Additionally, the seaports provide for fast unloading of cargo, which is later transported via a complex maze of railroad tracks, airways and roads.

A modern seaport performs a lot of functions, it is a place where not only goods are in transit but they are also sorted, manufactured and distributed. It is a multi-dimensional system; therefore it needs to be integrated within logistic chains to perform effectively (Hall, Pete...
