Jonathan Edwards Is most known for his big role in shaping the first Great Awakening. However, he has also made many other accomplishments throughout his lifetime. He is a Yale College graduate and soon after became a preacher of the Christian religion, a philosopher, and a theologian. Some people even consider him to be “America’s most important and original philosophical theologian”. He gave a famous sermon that greatly affected the Roman Christian tradition. Edwards helped anybody and everyone he could. His Many followers became known as the New Light Calvinist Ministers over time. Edwards took great pride in helping others throughout his life. He contributed to many Christian conversions, and was a big part of The Great Awakening. With everything Edwards dedicated himself to throughout his life, he helped influence the Roman Catholic traditions.
Early Years
Jonathan Edwards was born on October 5, 1703 in Massachusetts. He was the son of minister, Timothy Edwards, who earned most of his living by tutoring college students. Jonathan had a large family consisting of 11 children, Jonathan being the fifth. Since Jonathan’s father was knowledgeable and tutored students for a living, Jonathan and his siblings all had a good teacher and role model to look up to. Jonathan’s father and sister pushed, and trained him for college.
Jonathan was always a fan of Yale College, and that is exactly where he goes in 1716. He was only thirteen years old at the time. Most children is this time did not have an education and Edwards was going to college at such a young age Jonathan first became intrigued with philosophy when he read John Locke’s essay Concerning Human Understanding. The Legacy
Jonathan Edwards lived his life in the light of the lord. He lived a very proficient life for a preacher. Even from the early years of Edwards’s life, a bright future was inevitable. His college brilliance allowed him to voyage right into his further accomplishments. Being called America’s most important philosopher or preacher is certainly one of his finest accomplishments. Also, Edwards will always be remembered by his important role in the Great Awakening. Jonathan was a strong influence of Roman Christian tradition. I personally believe Jonathan Edwards greatly influenced the Roman Catholic tradition because many of his beliefs and writings are still around today. Edwards helped those in need and contributed to many Christian conversions.
