An Atmosphere of Mystery and Suspense in The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde During the Nineteenth century, horror stories were getting more popular than ever. Several distinctive horror stories, like Dracula, Frankenstein and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde are still known today. These stories were not set in busy countries, but written as happening in Transylvania, Switzerland, the Arctic, and other far away and little known countries. The setting links to some peculiar characteristics of the main characters as we can see with Dracula. No one may wish to look at him or talk to him, because Dracula is such a scary, ugly and disgusting personality and appearance. These kinds of characters make people more afraid when they read. It needs to be noted that these novels are not structured as a continuous narration. Robert Louis Stevenson writes this novel in contemporary settings, which means the settings of this story are not far from London. The reason is probably to make the reader feel much more scared, because there is a hidden risk near where we live. In addition, the author tries to stir uncertain feelings in the reader by creating a dual character that has both evil and good sides. The story is set in 19th century England. In details, there are some particular locations where Dr. Jekyll used to live and nearby his house. For example, Sohowas the place where Mr. Hyde used to live. The mysterious cellar doors become scarier because of the surrounding such as a foggy night, faint backgrounds, scary bell sounds from the church, and other unusual characteristics of Mr. Hyde. Moreover, the physical background is located in one of the ... ... middle of paper ... ...unexplained, the death of Mr. Hyde means that this story now reaches the end and no more brutal events will happen. However, his death makes us think about the reason why he had to kill himself, the unsolved strange relationship between Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and the real identity of Mr. Hyde. In conclusion, this story is based on the conflict between Mr. Hyde and Dr. Jekyll, who are two sides of the same person. The description of evil and good will is well presented to the reader. It needs to be noted that the environment were this story is set creates a steady suspense mood and makes a deep impression on the reader. It was a successful story in the Victorian times depicting the fight between evil and good will and does so using a refined sense that could have made the existence of Mr. Hyde a reality for them.
