“Rock n’ Roll” as we know it today had a huge impact on all races and social classes during its early decades. Rock and roll most certainly posed a threat to the middle class propriety. With this new style of music arising and the mass culture shift taking place, the middle class began noticing individuals not conforming to (what was believed to be) acceptable standards of behavior. The novel All Shook Up gives great examples and explains just why and how rock n’ roll posed such a threat to this particular group of individuals and their beliefs. Prompt 1 Mr. Dadier and Gregory Miller’s relationship throughout Blackboard Jungle reflects the socioculture happenings in the civil rights movement in relation to rock-and-roll. The beginning of the film opens with its only rock song Bill Haley and the Comets “Rock Around the Clock” and Dadier first encountering a group of students dancing, harassing a woman and gambling or as Shumway (125) describes, “helping to define the culture’s conception of dangerous youth and to make rock & roll apart of that definition.” The opening scene informs both Mr. Dadier and the viewer that rock-and-roll has already reached this racially integrated school noting that Gregory Miller has yet to be in a seen. For the viewers of this 1955 movie there would be a more profound reaction to the sight of a racially integrated school dancing to “Rock Around the Clock” because just a year before Brown vs Board of Education was passed which according to Szatmary (21) “helped start a civil rights movement that would foster an awareness and acceptance of African American culture, including the African American based rock-and-roll.” Since rock-and-roll was recognized as created by African-Americans it is easy for white Americans of the time to use African-American culture as a scapegoat for unruly teen behavior presented in the opening scene. The African-American civil rights movement was a cruel time for the African American race to endure due to the harsh discrimination and segregation that they faced. This movement fought for the rights and the equality of African Americans in the United States. With all that was going on, African Americans turned to music for motivation, courage, inspiration and strength to overcome the difficult obstacles that they would soon face. “Non-violence marchers faced beating, hosing, burning, shooting, or jail with no defense other than their courage and songs” (Hast 45). “It's been a long, a long time coming/ But I know a change gonna come, oh yes it will” (Cooke, Sam. A Change Is Gonna Come). Music was their greatest hope for change in the near future and is the thing that kept them fighting for what they deserved. They came together with each other due to the lyrics of many different songs that kept the civil rights movement alive and known. Music painted a vision that they could picture and look forward to; it was a dream that they could fight for. “Music empowered African Americans to hold tight to their dream of racial equality” (Jeske). A genre of music that bought society together during this movement was folk.
The book depicts the story of culture conflicts of the music, which arose from the introduction of the foot-tapping, hip-swaying music now known as rock n' roll (Graarrq). The outcome of rock n’ roll coincided with tremendous uproar in the movement to grant civil rights to African American. Trapped in the racial politics of the 1950s, rock n’ roll was credited with and criticized for promoting integration and economic opportunity for blacks while bringing to “mainstream” cloture black styles and values (Altschuler). Black values were looked over and kind of not important to whites. Whites were very much so well treated then blacks were, however no one spoke out until the outcome of rock n’ roll.
Many considered Rock ‘n’ Roll culture as a bad influence to all people, but as the genre aged and the now not-so-young crowds had matured, Rock was respected and appreciated by most of America for it was now seen as a legitimate art form. As for its creators, there is no one other than the greats of race music to thank for that. A time of shift involving a large number of African-Americans migrating to cities in the north. Through the medium of the blues, African-Americans expressed a resilience of spirit which refused to be crippled by either poverty or racism. It was no coincidence that rock ‘n’ roll and the civil rights movement started at the same time. The genre originated from African American music and was greatly discriminated against. Traditional white Americans would target anything bad about it. But as the teenager demographic of the 1950s started increasing the sales of the music, the genre started gaining more popularity. It was the style of Elvis Presley and his new voice that made girls weak in the knees and boys want to be him. Artists such as Presley had enough influence to change the view of their devoted fans on civil rights issues. Soon as protest songs and rock ‘n’ roll became more popular and influential, it began a gap between the young adult generation and their parents which led to the rebellion of the civil rights movement. In conclusion this report has helped us understand the significance of Music in America. Also, the impact it has on music we listen too. Music is very much like a big chain reaction. Rock ‘N’ Roll, much like music today, stood out and was in a way rebellious. Parents now hate Rap and we love it. People in the 70’s loved Rock ‘N’ Roll and parents hated it. This shows that maybe no matter how much older people deny it, the time gap and generation gap is not too far apart. Without Rock ‘N’ Roll the World would without a doubt be changed. Any guess to that of which way would be a good one.
Rock n’ roll was revolutionary in the sense that it was a fusion of American music genres. Rock music broke down color barriers, and gave adolescents their own form of expression that was unique. It is a story of a boy, William Miller (Patrick Fugit), becoming a man while learning about the rock-n-roll culture with his only true friend, his tape recorder.
