Amy Tan’s “The Pair of Tickets” expresses an unique story of a woman named Jing Mei who is travelling through China. She was raised in San Francisco California as American Chinese. But after her mother, Suyuan Woo passes away, she embarks on a journey to China to discover her Chinese family root, finding her twin sister. During the travel, she meets family members in China including the twin sisters whom she have never met before. By utilizing symbolism and imagery, Amy Tan weaves the theme of the story that Jing Mei who previously rejected her Chinese identity is finally becoming Chinese (179 Tan) into the elements of the story. “Peanut’s Fortune”, a short story written by Amy Tan, is set in China during a turn into a new year. As the Chinese prepare for the New Year celebrations, Peanut and her sister stumble upon a prosperous fortune teller who offers to change Peanut’s fate. With Peanut’s consent, the fortune-teller takes away her fated marriage with a local man, and destines her to marry a wealthy man from Shanghai. The fortune-teller then shows Peanut’s sister a glimpse of her misfortunate future and offers to change her fate as well. However, Peanut pulls her away into the crowded market, leaving her sister to be stuck with her bad luck.
Although Mrs. Spring Fragrance has only lived in America for a short amount of time, her husband states “There are no more American words for her learning” (865). It is obvious through reading this statement that Mrs. Spring Fragrance has become quickly acquainted with not only the English language, but also with American customs and traditions. However, not every character in Mrs. Spring Fragrance adjusts to American culture as easily as Mrs. Spring Fragrance; some characters have a difficult time leaving their Chinese traditions of marriage and accepting that in America, love comes before marriage. Throughout Mrs. Spring Fragrance, Sui Sin Far describes the process that the Chinese characters experience as they slowly begin to alienate traditional Chinese culture and becoming Americanized through accepting American culture as their own.
The journey from Chongqing to America was one with many obstacles and Suyuan sacrificed so much for her daughter hoping that one day June will be successful. The support and care that Suyuan provided for June ended when she suddenly passes away which forces June discerns how little she actually knows about her own mother. This seemingly ordinary life of June disappears as she discovers her mother’s past which included siblings that have been abandoned and thus attempts to find her long lost sisters. This idea was brought up by the Aunties of the Joy Luck Club that her mother founded which can be seen as the call to an adventure. The purpose of this journey was not only to find her sisters but to also discover her mother for who Suyuan truly was. In June’s eyes, Suyuan was always impossible to please and she was never on the same page as her mother who believes a person could be anything they wanted in America-the land of opportunities. “Riding the Bus with My Sister” by Rachel Simon is a touching, true life journey about Beth and her sister Rachel. Beth and Rachel are in there thirties at the time the book takes place. They were born eleven months apart and aside of their age difference and their personality, Beth is different from Rachel because she suffers from mental retardation. Beth has lived on her own in her subsidized apartment and enjoys riding the bus routes around Pennsylvania city. Beth asked Rachel to come stay a year with her in order to accompany her in her daily bus route routine and Rachel agreed. “Riding the Bus with My Sister” documents Rachel’s remarkable journey her and her sister spent together and her learnings from Beth. Simon presents views on how those with mental retardation should be treated and self-determination.
The passage “A Pair of Tickets” written by Amy Tan, presents the idea or theme of belonging somewhere. In this passage Jing-mei yearns to find the “Chinese side” of herself. She feels as if she has never had one or lost it along the way of her journey in life. However Jing-mei finds it on a trip to China she will never forget. Tan really emphasized how lost Jing Mei was in the beginning of this passage, a joyful tone was also emphasized in this passage.
As the daughter mature, they begin to feel that their identities are incomplete and become interested in their Chinese heritage. One of Jing-mei’s greatest fears about her trip to China is not that others will recognize her as American, but that she herself will fail to recognize any Chinese elements within herself. Waverly speaks wishfully about blending in too well in China now that it’s in fashion, Waverly likes to think that being Chinese is part of her identity, and doesn’t appreciate it when her mom points out how American Waverly.

While reading your response to Morality Story; Rasheed’s Ticket I myself did not think the mom was going to be able to show up to the graduation either. I was surprise and had to read it twice. I did notice the difference between my response and your response was that you would not use money out of your pocket to pay for it, and I felt I would because he showed improvement from out of control behavior to decrease altercation. As she gets off the train, Jing-mei starts to describe her surroundings once again. For example, she describes Guangzhou as “The landscape has become gray, filled with low flat cement buildings, old factories, and then tracks and more tracks filled with trains like ours passing by in the opposite direction. I see platforms crowded with people wearing drab Western clothes, with spots of bright colors: little children wearing pink and yellow, red and peach” (266). The colors mentioned go along with how Jing-mei described her mother wearing clothes that do not go well together. The colors are bright, much brighter than the colors she saw on the train. It could mean that she is getting closer to her mother by seeing her in other people in China. However, Jing-mei has not fully embraced her roots, which is understandable since that side of her has only just awoken. Again, Jing-mei is questioning herself when she and her father are going through customs. For example, she describes the long lines as “getting on a number 30 Stockton bus in San Francisco” (266). Immediately after making that connection, Jing-mei reminds herself “I am in China. I remind myself. And somehow the crowds don’t bother me. It feels right” (266).
