Improving the American Public Education system is no longer a choice; it is something that needs to be done. Education is one of the most essential things in life. A good education makes for a good life. With this being said, why do a majority of students in today’s society care less about school? We have to make school interesting again for students to become engaged to learn. A few simple changes to the design of schools and teaching methods could go a long way. Granted, there are some pros to today’s education systems. There have been so many changes made through the past years. Today’s education needs to be modernized to suit our generation. In the past, students learned through text books and were expected to learn the material.
The United States did not fair too well, ranking 26th in mathematics, 17th in reading, and 21st in science. These results make you wonder, what is wrong with the United States education system? A teachers input on the courses a student should take can have a major impact on the students willingness to try a more complex class. If a student asks a teacher if he or she believes they could handle an honor, AP, dual credit, or any other advanced class, the teachers will often just make an assumption. If the teacher says no, this discourages the student from trying to challenge themselves and they won’t try as hard. Majority of the time the student is capable of handling a complex class, but they have been told they couldn’t do it and the student will start to believe
An important population is necessary for the nation’s success. With a growing population more and more jobs are going to be needed. If schools continue to fail, our generation won’t learn the skills needed to do these jobs. We are the future generation and if we are not taught our nations past mistakes, how are we expected to learn from them. We will just continue to make mistakes instead of bettering the country. The economy can also benefit from an educated population, if people learn and develop new skills, new jobs can be created. More jobs can lower the unemployment rate and raise wages. Each generation is looked at as an opportunity to take a step forward. This wouldn’t be possible with poorly educated citizens. With proper education, we can make advancements in many fields. The United States has proven to be a world leader with their powerful military, democratic government, and stringent foreign policies. There is one category however, the United States struggles to be number one in, education. As shocking as this may sound, the public school system in America is not superior to other developing countries. I have witnessed this scandalous phenomena firsthand, engrossed in the public school system from kindergarten to freshman year of high school. The student body and the school administration is morphing into a nonproductive system with a zombie-like attitude. American students lack academic drive and curiosity compared to European and Asian countries because the standard for academic success is constantly lowered. Americans must reform the school system and change their perspective on how important an education is to the rest of the world.
How will this growing problem be fixed, not only in the United States but the world as well? One important action is to continue the effort to improve schools worldwide. Schools in poorer areas of districts would benefit from a greater number of better trained teachers and faculty. The cause of such a low ranking is due to such heavy emphasis on standardized testing and not individual student achievement. Although the United States uses standardized testing as a crutch, it is not an effective measure of a student’s ability, a teacher’s competency, or a school’s proficiency.

However, the core learning method of a child does not change. Learning from others, they will watch, listen, and then act for themselves. Today, we can see how true this is by the examples of others. Those that are given the opportunity for education are more likely to find jobs and develop skills that not only improve a community, but influence the economic growth of their nation (Ravitch, Cortese, West, Carmichael, Andere, & Munson, 2009, p. 13). On the other hand, if an education is not provided to individuals, they can become a hindrance to that nation’s growth.

In our culture today, there is a huge emphasis on education, especially higher education. Society basically says the more educated you are, the better off you are. That is pretty much true if you live by the means of society. The basic idea that education, especially a college education, is something that people should pursue even into their adult years is not by any means a new idea.
One of the biggest problems with education is that it is poisoned in the way people view school. Some common phrases among students are that ?school is boring; school is work.? Theses attitudes have a direct effect on the effort that students put into their studies. One will obviously work harder when they aren?t bored with the task. There is a difference between hearing and listening and if students approach school as something that they see as boring and stressful than that student will only be hearing what the professor is saying. They may show up to class but this does not mean that they are necessarily there to learn. If school were fun than students would enjoy learning and thus, would learn more since it would be an enjoyable activity. School is just like a sport or a book in that if the book is well written and enjoyable than there is more incentive to read it, just as someone will put more effort into a sport that is fun than a sport they don?t enjoy. If school were fun, than students would strive to learn more.
