The American Dream: Unaffordable and Unbearable Nelson Mandela once said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world,” but what happens if this weapon becomes too expensive to use. Throughout our life time, what we are really taught is that how important it is for one to receive their education, but who really needs to be taught is the education system itself. It is an American dream for our and future generations to gain knowledge and advance because that’s what our nation needs; it needs people who we can trust to hand our nation to, but the debt that comes with educating our generations is holding a lot of them back and that’s unacceptable. According to data from the Labor Department, the price index for college tuition grew by nearly 80 percent between August 2003 and August 2013. That is nearly twice as fast as growth in costs in medical care, another area widely recognized for fast-rising prices. To simply state, at one point or another the debt has forced student to discontinue their education, and eventually the educational gap between our work force and the rest of the world will make it very hard to be competitive. So what do we do about these soaring prices of higher education? We can start from a plan of payment, which gives students enough time to pay their loans throughout the years keeping in mind whether that specific individual got a job following their degree. I myself am a student who attends an early college in hope of getting my associates without going in debt, and that’s another way debt can be taken care of.
