American Citizens Should Learn English On February 2009, The English Language Unity Act was introduced. This act would make english the official language of the U.S. What does that mean? It means that every service given by the government will only be given in english. So what's going to happen to all the people that don't know how to speak English? How are they going to understand? Well the only way is to force them to learn english. How can we do that? We can do this by showing them the benefits of knowing how to speak english. First, one benefit of knowing english can be financial success. For example, knowing how to speak english can help increase the changes of getting a good paying job says, Havovi Copper from “Immigrants Should Learn English”. Evidence given by U.S English, Inc that supports this, is a studied done by the Census that shows that income of the people that learned English increased about 30%. Another example is that people that know english have higher possibilities of saving money. How? They can get their citizenship and stop paying ever 10 years for their Permanent residency card. They can also understand when the government gives financial help, for example, with health care and food stamps. Another benefit can be socially/politically. For example, knowing english can help communicate with other people. Being able to speak english would help feel more comfortable around other people. Giving the opportunity of making new friends. Also B. Miller from “What Are the Benefits of Learning English?”says that many websites are mainly available in only English, and anyone that doesn't know to read english would have a problem in understanding it. In “Immigrants Should Learn English” Havovi Cooper says, “Immigrants are also particularly vulnerable in a new environment, so it’s even more important for them to know english before choosing the U.S. as their homeland so they can be well-versed in their rights and the laws protecting them.” A third benefit can be entertainment. You might be asking yourself why entertainment? Well many movies and TV programs produced in Hollywood are in english; to be able to understand what the movie is about it is necessary to know english. Also some movies and T.V programs produce in other countries are sold to the U.S and have subtitles that can be easily read in english. Another benefit can be cultural. Understanding english can help people from other countries understand the U.
Even though opposition party of English-only movement assert that it has close connections to restrictionist, anti-immigration organizations, which suggests that the English-only movement has a wider, more far-reaching, and more negative agenda than simply advocating an official English language policy, English should be the official language of United States, because in 1990 US census reported that 97.1 % of the US population speak English. In addition, English will allow people to communicate with each other, discuss their points of view, and encourage trust, while reducing racial hostility and discrimination. Another example is that 87% of American voters want English to become the official language, because it keeps everyone learning the same language. People can still learn other languages if they want, and it will also encourage immigrants to develop the English ability necessary in this country for economic and democratic
English as the official language of the United States could benefit the U.S. Government and America as a whole. America has long since been a multicultural nation and has been an English speaking nation since it was founded. The constitutional and federal documents are all in English, which furthers the American people, believing English should be our official language. The majority of states already have English as their official language, for English has always provided a much needed cohesion to our diverse citizens since it was founded.
Language is part of the few benefits that immigrants bring with their culture. United States benefits from cultures of the many immigrants that migrate to the U.S. the variation of different languages brings great benefit to the U.
Making english the only official and legally recognized language in the United States would certainly be a positive change for those who only speak english. The passing of this law could be used in the workforce to level out the playing field. It is no surprise that americans who speak more than one language in the United States have an advantage over those who only speak one language. Large companies and even small business are always looking for employees who are bilingual. Having bilingual employees can be very beneficial to their businesses. It allows the companies or businesses employers to communicate with a larger range of people. Albert Costa, a researcher at the University of Pompeu Fabra in Spain conducted a study where individuals were tested on their mobility skills. This study showed that the bilingual subjects had a “heightened ability to monitor the ...
The government implementing English as the official legal language of America is imperative because a conformity of communication within our borders is needed to unify the vast diversity. Our mighty country was founded on providing all citizens with equality including inalienable rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. The United States is a progressive nation that welcomes people from far and wide to come and savor the God-given freedoms enjoyed by all. With all of the diversity from the countless immigrants coming in to our port cities, looking for a more prosperous future, a necessary tie is needed to bring the people of the nation together. Interaction with others --communicating-- is what gets everyone through their days and is essential to living. Without communication between people daily, the lack of communication would bring consequences throughout the world. Transactions among businesses would not be completed, sharing a story with a friend would never happen, the difficulty of understanding a problem of a neighbor, all of these and other necessities in daily life would never happen. The country, which we as citizens have created, needs to implement conformity among ethnicities to lessen the large variances of society to unite the entire nation.
These people will not be able to rise in their employment level and will be stuck working only with their fellow immigrants. They will have to find a person who can translate their language to others and get the services, such as medical assistance, they need, very much complicating all they do. Immigrants who have learned the English language have more respect in society. They get higher positions in jobs quickly, depending on their knowledge and also they can work as language translators for other immigrants who don’t speak English. This could actually be a job category with growth. Knowing English helps immigrants feel less isolated from their new community of English-speakers. They are able to socialize, make purchases, and function daily with their neighbors, their teachers, and their colleagues at
United States is a nation accommodating multi-ethnic groups of almost 500000 Americans. Since 1960s, America has received an increasing number of newcomers and immigrants from all over the world. However, language communication has somehow become a latent problem, whether in economical, political, or social aspects. Although English has been the common language of America for over two hundred years, it has never become the official language. Therefore, question like "Does America need an official language?" has been raised and argued in recent decades. Both sides hold very strong arguments on this controversial issue. In the articles "English Should Be Official" by Bradley S. O' Leary and "Language Cements Nationhood" by Ron Saunders, two authors uphold to make English the nation's official language, while the articles "English Shouldn't Be Official" by Victor Kamber, and "Does America Need an "Official" Language" by Tuben G. Rumbaut and Alejandro Portes are opposed to this resolution. The different attitude toward common language, money, and communication are the major arguments discussed in these four articles.
Overall, learning a foreign language is unnecessary in today’s world. With English dominating the business industry and translators available, learning one is a waste of time and resources. Also, other countries can learn English since such a large amount of our population already knows it. Even though there may be multiple people around the world who disagree, they cannot deny the facts. Foreign languages in today’s world are practically useless, let alone a complete waste of
English becoming the official Language of the United States is not just a controversial topic, it is necessary to keep America alive. American history and tradition is falling, and the ground on which she was founded is slowly fading. Americans must wake up to the importance of preserving the history of their culture. America is considered to be the greatest country in the world by even some who are not Americans. The “American Dream” is something people fantasize over all around the world. In order to keep the desire to be American, one must truly understand what it takes to be American. English is essential in living the American life. English should be the official language of the United States to give the people what they want, to recognize the historic role, and to limit controversy.
Language is an important part of our lives. I remember when I arrived to USA I could speak a little English. I went to school to improve my language, reading and writing skills; even now I am learning my second language, without English I cannot survive in this new environment. Now I am raising my own kids and I want them to have this important skill, this privilege of knowing a second language, language of their parents and grandparents. By looking at studies of bilingual children, research shows how important it is for a child to learn a second language. Raising a bilingual child is a benefit because it improves social skills, academic proficiency, introduces child to a different culture, and prepares for the future.
...ge. Also it helps immigrants to know each other cultures. Moving on, Excelling in speaking English might get your future secure. As youth will get better jobs and luxurious life. For instance in “Global Anxieties and Local Debate”, Banting gives us the illustration that becoming as one unite it not only helps to know about each other cultures or languages but it also creates peace and love.
Speaking a language other than your mother tongue opens a door onto the world. Becoming proficient in a foreign tongue equates to a wider range of options in love, career, and friendships.
Foreign language skills can be useful in promoting American foreign interests. In a global economy, doing business abroad is paramount, but language barriers can be a burden. Opponents of a foreign language requirement in education would argue that most foreign businessmen already speak English. Admittedly, most foreign competitors do speak English, but only out of necessity. They learned to speak English in an effort to better communicate with their American counterparts and take advantage of the money making potential of doing business in America.
Actually, the majority of people in the world “speak 1.69 languages- not high enough to conclude that the average person is bilingual” (source C). Having the ability to communicate in one language can help others communicate in everyday life from walking through town and shopping to making deals in business. Having a society that is monolingual can improve economies and relations throughout the world. Also, there was a survey in 2007 to determine the number of 5 year olds and older who spoke a language other than English at home. Out of the 280,950,438 people, 225,505,953 of them spoke only English at home (source E). This means that again 20% of people spoke a language other than English at home. English is a popular language, not just in English speaking countries, but also in countries that it is not the primary language. As the world changes, English becomes more and more of a necessity for society to communicate. As time progresses, English may be the only language needed to communicate more for people around the world. Through the globalization of the English language, its effects would greatly improve society by shortening time lost in language barriers and improve understandings of
English is, almost certainly, the most important subject that a child can learn in school. Without knowing proper English, a child will not be able to communicate effectively with the English speaking nation. They would be shut off from education and other people in this country. A person who does not poses proper English limits his or her ability to achieve their highest potential. Knowledge of the English language is important to learn to be able to communicate with others, in the teaching of immigrant students, and in finding and maintaining a job.
