Identify a marketing issue related to a company, product, or brand: American Apparel (AA) is a vertically integrated company, which means that its designs, manufactures, sells to other retailers and sells directly to consumers. During the past year the company filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy out of the blue. Selling most of its inventory within a few days. The brand was known for its “iconic,” “clean,” “simple,” and “timeless styles, each item available in a variety of colors. Though one of the biggest factors of the brand was that everything was made in the USA; sweatshop free, cutting out the middle man causing prices to be a little higher than other brands of the same nature (Forever 21, H&M, etc.).

The marketing issue relating to American Apparel has to deal with their brand image and their target segment. For one, they have a brand that caters to a younger crowd of “hipsters,” however, the prices and the selections they offer their customers doesn’t equate. The segment they aim to target, is also the same targeted by Urban Outfitters, Forever 21, and H&M. The latter stores all excelling in competition either due to affordable pricing ranges, unique product identities, or different production processes. From this search I was able to see that the biggest following, came from Canada, followed not so closely by the United States, and then the United Kingdom. The most popular cities were Los Angeles, Vancouver, and New York.
