Education is one of the most important factors to any person’s success in their lifetime, but is higher education really worth it? The answer is found in the article “America’s Most Overrated Product: The Bachelor’s Degree.” Written by Marty Nemko who was most likely inspired to write this because of his experience as a career counselor. In this article Nemko addresses the parents of potential college students to inform them the truth about college’s being money hungry businesses. He brings fourth multiple examples of why bachelor degrees are overrated and how colleges are not being held to a high enough standard. Additionally, he argues that going to college isn’t even necessary for success, and that many of the skills needed to succeed in the workplace are already in the successful students not just taught at some college. The text as a whole reveals the ugly truth that colleges are more focused on making money than actually helping their students succeed and because of this fact parents should take action to protect their students from being harmed in the process.
Being able to support such bold accusations as Nemko does requires a strong claim along with valid evidence and strong warrants. Although Nemko does have a claim in this article it is not explicitly written in words. Claiming that even though college can be beneficial that does not mean going to college is necessary for everyone. Which makes this thesis a recommendation for a course of action. Moreover, he expresses the need to take action multiple times in his article.

Although Nemko does boldly ask parents to reconsider sending their children to college, he does not do so without providing strong evidence, which is presented mostly in the form of facts or statis...

...college. Because of Nemko’s argument I am able to agree with what he says as I too understand personally that college is not the end all be all because I have witnessed others close to succeed in life without it. Along with the connection to me this text connects to my class work and English 1302. As it teaches me that I should pay close attention to my critical reading skills as it is a dying quality in college graduates. Additionally, this text causes me to wonder about the future of colleges in America and whether or not the needed change will come or if it will just be up to parents and students to make the best choice. Finally, the message in the text fits appropriately to modern times and circumstances as college and college education has been a hot topic over the past years, which has caused large concern to the audience of his text, the parents and students.
