The Uses of Alternative Remedies and Their Effects on the Body BY: Linsey Shewmaker Alternative Remedies 1 The Uses of Alternative Remedies/Treatments and Their Effects on the Body The majority of the population gets sick or gets some medical condition and will head straight to the doctor for a prescription; prescriptions that will have a long list of side effects that sometimes seem worse than the original problem. They will buy pricey visits with specialists, when after visiting ten doctors the problem just keeps coming back, if it even ever went away at all. There has to be a simpler way. Something that doesn't come with a large price tag and doesn't have side effects; it fixes the illness and doesn't just mask the symptoms. Alternative medicine is becoming more and more popular because it attempts to find the underlying cause of the patient’s condition rather than focusing solely on symptomatic treatment. With many conditions there are simple, natural, and effective cures that could be considered next time as an alternative to traditional medicine or used with traditional medicine to reach optimal health. Homeopathy was founded in the late 1700s in Germany and has been widely practiced throughout Europe. Homeopathy is a medical philosophy and practice based on the idea that the body has the ability to heal itself. It is based on the idea that "like cures like." That is, if a substance causes a symptom in a healthy person, giving the person a very small amount of the same substance may cure the illness. In theory, a homeopathic dose enhances the body's normal healing and self-regulatory processes. In today’s world, many people assume that the latest medical technology and treatments are always the best option. However, all over the world, different techniques for curing diseases and aliments are being used. These methods fall under the category of complementary and alternative medicine.
Homeopathy medicine is a self-healing alternative medicine developed in 1790 by German physician and chemist Samuel Hahnemann. Homeopathy medicine aims to treat the whole body and not just the symptoms. Homeopathy medicine was very popular throughout the united states during the early 1900 but began to die out after the civil war. Homeopathy medicine is approximately 200 years old, though it is believed to have originated in 400 B.C through Hippocrates. However, Samuel Hahnemann gave this medical practice a name in the late 1700s and developed three principles for Homeopathy medicine that still stands today. Complementary and alternative techniques are the new age of medicine. These techniques especially combined with mainstream medicine could create a medical revolution. Complementary and alternative medicine techniques are helping to solve medical problems for many people without the side effects of mainstream medicine.
For many centuries, humanity has been on an eternal quest for cures and treatments for many chronic conditions. At the present time, conventional medicine is mostly performed by doctors and other health care professionals, with the extensive use of pharmaceutical drugs, surgery or radiation treatments for disease treatment. Conversely, even though not as popular, complementary and alternative medicine and treatment options are slowly gaining popularity and becoming an addition to traditional medicine.
Scientific medicine does save many lives through surgery or pharmacology drugs, but all of the advances of western medicine have inadvertently led to new problems. For example, living longer allows more time for development of chronic and degenerative diseases. “Iatrogenic” problems (illness caused by the medicine itself) as well as chronic illnesses have forced people to turn toward other dimensions of care. Conventional medicine is learning much about the complexity of human biology, but it is also learning less about how to handle difficult situations and adapt to crises arising from alternative treatments. Natural, non-invasive therapies, manipulative therapies and mind/body approaches are coming of age and taking on a partnership role with western medicine, affecting it for the better. The use of alternative medicine in health care should be taken seriously as they can improve a person’s health without the serious side effects of conventional medication; alternative medicine is becoming increasingly popular throughout the United States and it also focuses on prevention rather than intervention. Alternative medicine is used in place of conventional medicine. Usually alternative medicine is lumped together with complementary medicine which, instead of being used instead of conventional medicine, is used along with it, and abbreviated together as CAM. The controversy surrounding CAM practices is quite prevalent in the health care world. Many conventional practicing physicians believe that alternative methods of treatment such as herbs, vitamins, yoga, chiropractic etc…are not a viable choice because they are dangerous or because they simply do not help. Despite the naysaying’s of these physicians CAM practices have become increasingly popular throughout the population, with people looking for more organic, less harmful approaches to health care. Most of the CAM practices have been proven in studies and the people receiving them have significant beneficial results.
As a first way to heal, when people use alternative medicine, they take fewer drugs and chemicals in to their bodies and there are fewer side effects for them and if people protect themselves before they sicken, they do not need any pills. Frequently a person believes that herbal medicine is more naturally safe and soothing than drugs. Nevertheless, there’s no reasonable defense about this. Though many consumers trusted herbal medicine much more than the synthetic medicine because it’s safe and effective, but like anything else, it has its own limitations too.
