In Plato’s “Allegory of the Cave”, a group of prisoners are trapped in a cave for the entirety of their lives, unable to look at anything but the shadows cast on the walls. Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 depicts an eerily similar scenario, in which firemen are repurposed as book-burners instead of firefighters in order to keep its people ignorant and unquestioning of the world around them, only vacantly caring about what is on their televisions. The story follows a fireman named Guy Montag, who is attempting to discover truth on his own terms - rather than having the thinking done for him.
