Initially, the Odyssey is a story about a man trying to make his way back home to return to his kingdom. Odysseus has had a long journey with his crew around the world facing extreme obstacles. The allegory of this story is life lessons interpreted through his journey. Throughout the whole story, Homer (the author) had placed obstacles into the story for the reader to understand and comprehend. An example of this was when Odysseus had encountered the Sirens. The Sirens are birdlike women with human faces that sing beautifully to direct their ship toward the sound to destroy their ships upon rocks. Odysseus had the obstacle of temptation. He and his crew had to remain strong and stick to what he knew what was right and continue through his journey. This temptation only made him stronger and made him think how much more he needed to return back to his kingdom. This part of the story has placed a major impact because it was teaching Odysseus a moral lesson. Like in life people have many temptations that can change anything and everything. According to Laurence Perrine in his seventh edition of Literature: Structure, Sound and Sense he states the definition of interpretive literature is 'Literature written to deepen and broaden and sharpen our awareness of life.'; Interpretive literature is not candy coated. It allows its readers to experience the trials and tribulations of life. By using graphically realistic plots and endings, which are consistent to those in real life, interpretive literature achieves a higher literary value than escape literature. Interpretive literature allows its reader too step out of the fantasy world they might be living in and focus on what the world is really about. One might say an interpretive story provides insight to understanding. Not only understanding of ourselves, but our neighbors, friends, family or anyone else we might encounter.
Mythological and archetypal techniques coupled with the interpretation of symbolism found within a piece of literature tells the reader something about the mind and character of a people or culture. Not only does it allow you to delve deeper into this collective mind and speculate about the meaning of a particular work, it can give you something more. I believe that by using these techniques you also get a better glimpse into the main character’s state of mind. It also gives you clues as to is going on ‘behind the scenes’ that will affect the character’s mental state.

Odysseus goes through many unforeseen trials and tribulations, which exemplify his character. During these different happenings, Odysseus makes decisions that do not correspond to his character.

They can go even farther into each section with how much information they give us, or how much they make us fill in with our own interpretation or imagination. The characters' descriptions and their actions are what we picture in our minds. Although they need the other devices to complete the story, the authors use of characters can be what makes or breaks the story. There are many different types of characters that writers can use to help them distribute their message. Robert Frost uses nature as a character in his poem "Once By The Pacific," while Shirley Jackson uses the members of a small town to tell her story in The Lottery. While each is different, they both serve their intended purpose - to tell us a story.

Sometimes, symbolism throughout a story may not be noticeable when first read, but going back to analyze the text can add a deeper meaning to words and can also help to enhance the meaning behind the story line. In some instances, symbolism can leave a reader to ponder what the writer is trying to express with the symbolism used in the story; for symbolism can be interpreted differently and can have many layers of meaning to it.
