What effect did Alexander Graham Bell’s invention o the telephone have on society during the early 20th century?
When people think of what is the item that they use every day to make their life easier, cell phone would be the first thing to imagine. This is because cell phone had spread world widely and people thinks cell phone is a device that is indispensable to life. Cell phones are used mostly for playing game and achieving efficient communication through long distances, and this capability of cell phone made telephone’s purpose vain, because cell phone is much more comfortable to use. Bell had unusual amounts of curiosity to the world; he had special interest on science of sound. When Bell became teenager his mom started to lose the ability to hear, this made Bell even more into the science of sounds. His first invention that he made was at an age of twelve, he made a dehusking machine that removed the husks from the wheat which was much more efficient than flower mills. When Bell became an adult he started to teach elocutions which are the study of clear and expressive speech, and correct pronunciations. He helped deaf people to talk. A few years later when telegraphs were commonly used around the world, Bell stated to believe that he could invent a way to send human voices over wires. His invention didn't success as much until he met his assistant Thomas Watson, an electrical designer and mechanic. At the end of the trial and error he eventually got his telephone to work, on the year 1876. Within his experiment he said through a telephone “Mr. Watson, come here- I want to see you.” (Bell, 1876). Mr. Watson who was in another room successfully received the voice from the phone call and came to see Bell, the telephone was working. In the begging, telephone could only be used by wealthy people in urban areas because of its high price. However what Bell expected was different. Social scientist Pool claims that “Alexander Graham's wish was to reduce the expense of materials so that the poorest man cannot afford to be without this telephone” (Pool, 1977).
