The photograph, titled Alcoholic Father with His Son, creates a lot of compelling emotions, especially sympathy. The photographer’s name is unknown but it does not affect the message evident in the photo. With the use of juxtaposition, it strengthens the photograph and causes the viewer to truly take in the photo and try to understand what the boy is struggling to do. In this photograph, the father has lost his parental roles and the child is standing up and taking them on. He notices his father is in need of help and tries his best to pick him up. In this situation, the son is acting more mature than the father. The photographer’s argument, that alcoholism can damage relationships, is evident here because the father is certainly not acting like a father and the son has a lose of innocence moment when he decides to help his father back up. The son takes on the role of taking care of his father and that is opposite of what a father-son relationship should be like and it will affect both of them significantly. The son’s determination to get his father up is very riveting. He believes it is worth fighting for his father and not just letting him be. If his father’s behavior continues, it will cause a switch in roles between them two. This strengthens the photo significantly because it proves that the father has lost all control. He is passed out outside because of his addiction to alcohol. He does not even have the control to get himself inside his house and this shows how powerful alcohol is. Even if he was tremendously tired, he would have waited until he got inside someplace, not just pass out on the ground outside.
