The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse has many renditions. Albrecht Durer is the artist of one of the renditions. Albrecht Durer was a German artist that lived from 1471 to 1528. Albrecht lived in Nuremburg but traveled throughout Europe. His early life consisted of him living in Nuremburg and being an apprentice. Durer trained to become a draftsman in his father’s workshop, Albrecht Durer the Elder. During his travels, Albrecht found inspiration for paintings such as his landscapes. Albrecht traveled to many of the countries in Europe but his two trips to Italy show much influence on his style as an artist. Prior to his first trip to Italy, Albrecht married Agnes Frey. Durer’s first trip to Italy happened in 1494 but only stayed in Italy until 1495. Albrecht went on his second trip to Italy in 1505 and stayed for a year longer than his previous trip. It is considered gothic because the cut is very crowded with the figures expressing emotion. Unlike the style of the time which was the Renaissance style, the gothic style emphasized the expression and emotion. The common style of the time which was the Renaissance style focused on the classicism of the ancient Roman and Greek art and focused on the human person and achievement. It is hard to imagine that Durer would continue to use the Gothic style because he just returned from Italy which was thriving on the ideals of the Renaissance. Albrecht Durer continued his theme at the time of using somber colors. The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse has somber colors because it is a woodcut which means that Durer carved the image into a piece of wood. The image has a greyish look with the colors ranging from dark grey to light grey.
