Albert Abraham Michelson (surname pronunciation anglicized as Michael-son) was born December 19, 1852 in Strzelno, Poland into a Jewish family. He moved to the US with his parents in 1855, at the age of 2. He grew up in the mining town s of Murphy’s Camp, California and Virginia City, Nevada, where his father was a merchant. His family was Jewish by birth but non-religious, and Michelson himself was a lifelong agnostic. He spent his high school years in San Francisco in the home of his aunt, Henriette Levy (nee Michelson), who was the mother author Harriet Lane Levy. President Ulysses S. In the following year he obtained leave of absence to continue his studies in Europe. He visited the Universities of Berlin and Heidelberg, and the College de France and Ecole Polytechnique in Paris. In 1877, he married Margaret Hemingway, daughter of a wealthy New York stockbroker and lawyer. They has two sons and a daughter. Michelson was fascinated with the sciences, and the problem of measuring the the speed of light in particular. While at Annapolis, he conducted his first experiments of the speed of light, as a part of a class demonstration in 1877. His Annapolis experiment was refined, and in 1879, he measured the speed of light in air to be 299,864 + 51 kilometers per second, and estimated the speed of light in vacuum as 299,940 km/s, or 186,380 mi/s. After two years of studies in Europe, he resigned from the Navy in 1881. In 1883 he accepted a position as professor of physics at the Case School of Applied Science in Cleveland, Ohio. In 1890 he accepted a similar position at Clark University, Worcester, Massachusetts, and in 1892 he became Professor of Physics and the first Head of Department at the new University of Chicago where in 1925 he was appointed to the first of the Distinguished Service
James Lafayette Dickey, III was born in the town of Atlanta, Georgia on February 2, 1923. His parents were Maibelle and Eugene Dickey. He went to Ed S. Cook Elementary School and North Fulton High School as a kid, both of which are in Atlanta. He was athletic as a child. He played football and track, but his football career led him to a scholarship at the University of Clemson, in Clemson, South Carolina. But, before he went off to college he spent one year at the Darlington School in Rome, Georgia for one year in preparation for a college. He didn’t last longer than a year in Clemson though because he enlisted into the Army Air Corps.
James Earl Carter, Jr. was born October 1, 1924, in Plains, Georgia, into a family of fifth-generation Georgians. He grew up in the nearby small town of Archery. A fervent Baptist, He is a product of the Plains public school system. After he graduated from high school he attended Georgia Southwestern College and the Georgia Institute of Technology, and received a Bachelor of Science degree from the United States Naval Academy in 1946. In the Navy he became a submariner, serving in both the Atlantic and Pacific fleets and rising to the rank of lieutenant. Chosen by Admiral Hyman Rickover for the nuclear submarine program, he was assigned to Schenectady, N.Y., where he took graduate work at Union College in reactor technology and nuclear physics, and served as senior officer of the pre-commissioning crew of the Seawolf, the second nuclear submarine. He would serve under Rickover for the final two years of his career in the Navy, working as engineering officer on the nuclear sub.
Charles Portis was born in 1933 in El Dorado, Arkansas. He was known as Buddy by his friends (Chilton). His parents were Samuel and Alice Portis. The family also included Charles two brothers and one sister. He spent many days outdoors with friends and family. Charles went to the movies and watched western movies a lot which helped grow his interest in the west. Portis and his family moved to many different places in Arkansas including Hamburg. After graduating high school in Hamburg, Charles enlisted in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. He achieved the rank of sergeant and then got discharged in 1955 at the age of 22. After Portis was discharged from the Marine Corps, he went to college at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville to get his degree in journalism. He obtained his degree in 1958.

His father worked as a Baptist preacher and his mother was of Scottish descent. Because of his Scottage background he was believed to be mixed with African and Croatan Indian lineage. In a time when teaching African Americans was illegal, Revels had an opportunity to attend a school taught by a black women. Delfin's use of Incan symbols reestablishes links with the past that could very well hold signs of our future. Delfin graduated from the National School of Fine Arts in Lima in 1958. He served briefly as director of the Puno School of Fine Arts and then as an art teacher in Chile.
