First off, let me explain what the Alaskan fish business even is. The Alaskan fishing business is extremely profitable and very dangerous. This fishing business is so profitable because 95 percent of the salmon from the U.S. is caught and sold by Alaskan fisheries. With that staggering number the Alaskan fisheries have a monopoly like effect on the continental U.S. when it comes to salmon. Despite the immense possible profits the act of actually catching the fish is one of the most dangerous occupations. About 300 out of every 100,000 Alaskan fisherman die on the job each year, that is over 35 times the national average for deaths on the job. The king crab of Alaska is the holy grail of crabs if you are a crab fisherman. There are four types of this crab, red, blue, golden, and scarlet. The red king crab is the most common king crab with it being the most commercially harvested crab coming in from Bristol Bay and other smaller harvests coming in from Southeast Alaska, Norton Sound, and the Adak area. The red king crab with females can grow up to 10.5 pounds when fulls mature. And with males up to 24 pounds and a leg span of five feet when fully mature. Males and females have the life expectancy of about twenty to thirty years. In 1959 United States fishers caught about nearly two billion crabs worth around 1.6 billion dollars at the time, which is now worth around 13.1 billion dollars.The blue king crab like all crabs in ten legged that has a tail that is very distinctive. Blue king crabs can grow up to 18 pounds when they are a fully mature male. Other important commercially harvested crabs include the golden king crabs, Tanner crabs, snow crabs, and the Dungeness crabs. The golden king crabs also known as stone crabs are mainly found in cold seas along with the rest of the crabs in the world. Golden king crabs can weigh from around five to eight pounds. They eat mostly worms, clams, mussels, snails, and brittle start along with smaller sea creatures. These crabs are one of the smallest king crabs, but have bigger eggs, then both the red and blue king crabs. Tanner crab was originally first harvested in 1961 now being one of the most commercially important in Alaska. Tanner crabs are located throughout the North Pacific Ocean and the Bering Sea along the shelf and coastal water. Fully mature male tanner crabs can weigh up to one to four pounds.
