The history of Air Defense Artillery dates back to the early nineteenth century. Air Defense’s introduction in World War 1 allowed for more diversity in terms of furthering joint, air, and missile counteractive operations. Like any other branch, air defense has gone through trial and error before actually finding its appropriate space in the army. The Air Defense Artillery branch continues to increase its technical ability and steadily improves its success, especially during Desert Storm and Desert Shield, all while keeping true to its humble beginnings. Air Defense Artillery originated from the Coast Artillery Corps to defend the United States against naval attack and bombardment. Air Defenders were the first Army units to engage the Japanese at Pearl Harbor. They covered the withdrawal to Bataan in the Philippines, having shot down eighty-two enemy planes. In Europe, AAA units integrated into United States armies. AAA units were among the first ashore on D-Day and not only provided air cover for the beachhead but assisted in destroying the enemy bunkers on the heights overlooking the beaches. During the Korean War, AAA units at Suwon airbase were the first Army units to engage the invading North Korean Forces. Throughout the war, the tremendous firepower of Air Defender’s broke the stalemate of many battles such as “Heartbreak Ridge” which was a great movie and “Pork chop Hill”. During the Cold War period as the USSR developed both nuclear weapons and the intercontinental bomber force to deliver them led to the development and fielding of hundreds Air Defense Artillery (ADA) missile batteries around the United States.
