It is usually goes unrecognized and untreated. Common questions asked are what causes it and how do you treat it? I will answer these questions for you.
Nearly 900,000 teenagers suffer from agoraphobia. Most people don’t realize that panic disorders often first become apparent in teenage years. A large percent show sings before their 18th birthday. Its less noticeable in adolescence because the disorders are attributed to the normal stresses of puberty. This is the most common phobia and effects 5-10 percent of adults also. Adult with this are four times more likely to develop other anxiety disorder or abuse drugs and alcohol. Its more common in woman than in men. I think shyness in boys gets more negative attention but shyness in girls is more accepted by people so the guys change and girls don’t. In an article I read a teenage girl with agoraphobia thought she was going crazy and no one else had her problem. After getting help she realized that a lot suffer from this and she shouldn’t let it take over her life.
Agoraphobic’s fears often interfere with work, school, relationship and daily life. Symptoms associated with agoraphobia are rapid heartbeat, trembling, sweating and upset stomach. The most sever are panic attacks which are short peri...
The poem, “My Great-Grandfather’s Slaves” by Wendell Berry, illustrates the guilt felt for the sins of a man’s ancestors. The poem details the horror for the speaker’s ancestors involvement in slavery and transitions from sympathy for the slaves to feeling enslaved by his guilt. Berry uses anaphora, motif, and irony, to express the speaker’s guilt and provide a powerful atmosphere to the poem.
Agoraphobia is derived from the Greek words agora, meaning “gathering place” or “assembly” which was used to describe a city’s marketplace, and phobia meaning “fear.” It literally means "fear of the marketplace." Carl Westphal first coined the term “agoraphobia” in 1871 to describe people who were afraid of large open spaces. Since then, the definition of agoraphobia has been modified and continues to develop as more research is done. (Barlow, 2002, p. 328) The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (5th ed.; DSM–5; American Psychiatric Association [APA], 2013) defines the essential trait of agoraphobia as "marked, or intense, fear or anxiety triggered by the real or anticipated exposure to a wide range of situations." (p 218) It is the most common phobia. To further understand agoraphobia, this essay will explore the characteristics, causes, being a Christian with agoraphobia, and the treatments.
In the general population, less than five percent of people experience panic disorders, and only six percent develop agoraphobia during their lives, (MacNeil 2001). A diagnosis of panic disorder is given when panic attacks turn into a common occurrence, for no apparent reason and the person begins to change their behaviour because of the constant fear of having a panic attack. Someone suffering from agoraphobia has a fear of being somewhere where help will not be provided in case of an emergency; one third to one half of people diagnosed with panic disorders develops agoraphobia, (Hoeksema & Rector, 2011, p. 204). Research has examined two well-known ways a panic disorder with agoraphobia (PDA) can be treated: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) (alone and combined with two other medications) and Experimental Cognitive Therapy (ECT). Examining the research allows for a comparison of each treatment, along with a discussion of implications, resulting in determining which treatment is the most effective for someone who suffers from a panic disorder with agoraphobia.
Having anxiety is common and a part of everyday life however; there is a huge difference between a fear and a social phobia or anxiety disorder. The difference and important distinction psychoanalysts make between a fear and a phobia is “a true phobia must be inconsistent with the conscious learning experience of the individual” (Karon 1). Patients with true phobias “do not respond to cognitive therapy but do respond well to psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic therapy” (Karon 2). Social phobia is a serious anxiety disorder that should not be taken lightly or mistaken as a fear you will simply grow out of the older you get. Social phobia has the power to destroy lives and can prevent people from living and enjoying their life to the fullest. Social phobia is a disabling condition that often starts between the ages of early childhood and late adolescence. The origins of social phobia can be linked to “traumatic social experiences and social isolation” (Hudson118-120). Social phobia is treatable however; research and statics show that not many seek help.
Anxiety is a feeling of tension associated with a sense of threat of danger when the source of the danger is not known. In comparison, fear is a feeling of tension that is associated with a known source of danger. I believe it is normal for us to have some mild anxiety present in our daily lives. Everyday that I can think of I have some kind of anxiety though out that day. Anxiety warns us and enables us to get ready for the ‘fight or flight’ response. However, heightened anxiety is emotionally painful. It disrupts a person's daily functioning.
Human trafficking is a global problem that affects the lives of millions of people in almost every country of the world, and which deprives them of their human dignity. As one of the most infamous crimes in the world, human trafficking misleads and turns women, men and children to fall victims from all corners of the world every day. It also leads to their exploitation. Although best known form of human trafficking is sexual exploitation, hundreds of thousands of victims are also trafficked for forced labor, forced labor as domestic servants, child begging, or the removal of organs. They are promised a new life where they can start all over in the U.S. Usually the people that are trafficked across continents are from poor social classes and are fed lies so that later they can be trafficked and abused by others. Most of the people trafficked are forced into prostitution, involuntary labor and other forms of servitude to repay the debt that they owe. The FBI states “Human trafficking represents an estimated $32 billion in international trade yearly, illegal international trade estimated at $650 billion in 2010”.
2010. Human Trafficking: A Global Perspective. New York, NY: Cambridge University Press.). And The United States is widely regarded as a popular destination country for human trafficking as federal reports estimate that between 14,500 to 17,500 victims are trafficked into the United States every year. That doesn’t even include the number of victims who are trafficked within the United States each year ("WHAT IS HUMAN TRAFFICKING?" State of California Department of Justice Office of the Attorney General. State of California Department of Justice Office of the Attorney General). Most women trafficked to the U.S. are forced to work in the sex industry (including strip clubs, peep and touch shows, massage parlors that offer sexual services, and prostitution). They are also trafficked to work in sweatshops, domestic servitude, and agricultural work. (Skinner, E. Benjamin. 2008. A Crime So Monstrous: Face-to-Face with Modern-Day Slavery. Agoraphobia, like many phobias, is often unreported because of the phobia limiting the person (“Agoraphobia,” 2014). Panic disorder often occurs with agoraphobia, creating a barrier in recording the frequency of agoraphobia (“Agoraphobia,” 2014). ...
Social anxiety disorder is also known as social phobia. It is defined as the fear of social situations that involve interaction with other people. It is the fear and anxiety of being judged and evaluated negatively by other people or behaving in a way that might cause embarrassment or ridicule. This leads to feelings of inadequacy, self-consciousness, and depression. The person with social anxiety disorder may believe that all eyes are on him at all times. Death it is something we all must face at one point in our lives or another. It is either a death of a loved one, friend or co-worker. Sometimes it’s the devastation from a natural disaster. No matter what makes us face the idea of death it is how we handle this realization that truly matters. When Gilgamesh is faced with the horrendous loss of his dear friend and comrade Enkidu he begins to fear death. In Gilgamesh’s youth he is proud without fear of death, it is not until he watches his friend die that his own mortality becomes a fear.
Human trafficking is the second most criminal industries in the world that exploits the lives of women and children. They take the children from their home and make them work in horrible condition for hours and pay them little money. The women are some time turn into sex slaves. As stated in Kiener (2012) each year more than 5,000 women and children from Malawi for sex exploitation aboard (p.475). People sometimes put their selves in the situation to get taking, because they are desperately trying to leave their current situation. Even though slavery was banned world wide it still occurs today and millions of people are victims each year. Mam said “people think slavery ended years ago” (as citied in Kiener, 2012, p.475). Human trafficking is thriving and making money almost thirty-two billion dollars a year in profits. Shelley argued growing dramatically since the mid- 1900s, thanks to factors like the ending of the Cold War, disappearing boarders, globalization, economies and growth of international crime syndicates (as citied in Kiener, 2012, p.477). Profits are soaring because prices are so little. The need of slave labor is high and inexpensive. Since there are so many slaves the traffickers do not have to spend money or take care of the slave. The trafficker may dump or killed them.
Over the course of history millions of people have been taken and used for the specific purpose of financial gain. The work these victims do range from sexual acts to manual labor. The victims are often taken and moved to a new location that they are unfamiliar with, and they are forced to do work. Human trafficking has ranged from slavery to brothels. People from all walks of life and ages. Children were often taken to do Menial labor and sexual acts, while adults were also used for organ transplantation. Human trafficking is one of the most cutthroat and ruthless business where people are thought to be completely expendable, but through public awareness and laws human trafficking could eventually be almost non existent.
How could you define something that is so broad? What is human trafficking? Some experts define it as a sex trade. Majority of the population defines it as prostitution. The thing about human trafficking is that it’s a little between kidnapping and prostitution. The real definition of human trafficking is a recruitment of people that can be male or female, which these people use fraud, deception, and abduction. In some other case they use people transport them and have power over people having them to think that they owe the money back for the use of exploitation. With exploitation comes with forms of prostitution and other immorality activities, hard labour, acts of intensive slavery, or even death. Death comes with forms of removing organs to get back the money they used on the person. With the hard labour comes with jobs like construction work and factory work. You can refer to human trafficking as modern day slavery. Most of the time the reason people do this crime because they do not have to pay the worker but keep all the money for themselves and that’s why they make a lot of profit off of human trafficking. Slaves have restricted freedom just as the people that is being used as sex slaves. The females and males that are being used as sex slaves live in very poor conditions. With living in poor conditions comes with very poor hygiene. With illegal activity comes with risk. Human trafficking is a very violent business. The United States is one of the main points to transport individuals for human trafficking. With the cost of living at it all time high, with jobs play low wages, human traffickers look at this as a great oppor...
