In the reading, Against Heresies by St. Irenaeus of Lyon goes into great detail over the Gnostic teaching and their false thinking ways. St. Irenaeus points out the reasons the Church does not support the Gnostic teaching, one of his biggest argument is that tradition, written by Apostolic successors is error-free information that must be followed, because it was handed down to man through the power of the Holy Spirit. Therefore, tradition should not be ignored since it is a part of the wholly word of God that declares there is only one God.

Many of the false thinkers, Valentinus and Marcion rebelled during the midst of the Church and went around corrupting the rule of faith, claiming “they are wiser not only than the elders, but even than the apostles, and have found the genuine truth.” St. Irenaeus mentions different successors and how each successor is a full demonstration of the Church’s faith and truth. We know through tradition the Apostles followed Jesus Christ during his time of proclamation. A lot of Jesus Christ teaching to the Apostles was handed down to them in oral testaments. Later, created into written testaments by the followers of the Apostles. An Apostle taught each successor; therefore the Church has more trustworthy and dependable sources than other false thinkers. Every cynical believer that is willing to listen to the antics of the Gnostic teaching should remember “there are so many clear testimonies, we should not seek from others for the truth which can easily be received from the Church.” We should all heartily uphold the tradition of the Church and ignore should blasphemy
