Can you imagine your pet, Fluffy being ripped apart on your table for an animal experiment. Well I now I would not like that happening to me so I doubt you would not like that either. So many animals die every year because of animal experiments. Animals should never die because of animals experiments. Some people may think, that scientist are using these animals to test cancer cures or virus cures. Research shows that these parts are different than humans so, the way an animal will process the medicine will affect the test since some of the most important parts in an animal body are different compared to humans. The last important thing that you need to take into consideration is the body temperature of the animals they are using. An average body temperature for an animal is 109.4° F. Scientist are now using animals that have a higher body temperature. If these animals have a higher body temperature then it could be affecting the way the medicine is processed in an animal's body because if you are testing fever medicines the scientist may be able to bring the temperature of an animal down but not to where it needs to work for an average human temperature of 98.6° F. Scientist are putting a cure on animal that is already dieing in the process. Sometimes animals are put to toxic test just to see what damage will be done. Does this seem right to you? The roots of animal experimentation began in the early 1600s when the world expressed in interests on the functions of animals and their uses in human life. However, it wasn’t until the incident regarding the drug thalidomide in 1960 did the government make it a requirement for drugs be tested on animals. During the incident, millions of women took the medication believing that it would be a source of relieve from morning sickness, not knowing however that it would cause irrevocable effects on their unborn children (Watson 4). Although the ruling seemed to provide a sigh of relief to some, the very idea of placing animals in strange uncomfortable environments and experiencing pain and euthanasia angered many. According to the American Anti-Vivisection Society, commonly known as AAVS, It is wrong to treat animals as objects for the purpose of scientific research, and to cause them pain and suffering (“Animal Research Is Unethical and Scientifically Unnecessary”). Although the arguments against animal experimentation seem credible, animal testing on medicines and products are necessary in order to insure the safety of human beings.
Animals should not be used as test subjects for any research. The innocent and helpless animals’ rights are being violated when they are involved during animal experimentation. These unfortunate animals do not have a choice whether or not they want to be involved in testing. They are not intended for people to experiment on for their own selfish reasons. It is not right to take advantage of the animals because they are helpless and cannot protect themselves. Animals and humans have similarities; they both behave, feel, think, and experience pain. Therefore, animals should be treated with the same respect as humans. The pain and suffering an animal is forced to endure is not worth any new product. It is cruel and inhumane to take advantage of an innocent animal. These tests that use animals to ensure the safety of products are extremely common without people even knowing about it. Animals are used to test the safety of products, advance scientific research, and develop models to study disease and to develop new medical treatments all for the sake of mankind. Losing animal experimentation would cause many people to lose jobs, and we would not advance in medical technologies. No one would be guaranteed safety when using a product designed to help them. However, what many people forget are the great numbers of animals that have suffered serious harm during the process of animal testing. Animal testing is the use of animals in biological, medical, and psychological studies. The development and enhancement of medical research has been based on the testing of animals. There are many questions being asked if animal research is good or not or if the benefit for us is way greater the abuse of animals. Doing tests on animals can help find ways to cure diseases, but testing on them is wrong. Although we want to find cures for diseases to help many people, testing on animals not only brutally hurts them but it also denies the animals the rights they have.
If you had the choice to live or die, which would you choose? If you had the alternative to live in a cage or in a house which would you select? If you had the option to have experiments that caused you pain preformed on you would you? It has meant eradication of smallpox, effective treatment for diabetes and control of infection with powerful antibiotics. The cardiac pacemaker, microsurgery to reattach severed limbs, and heart, kidney, lung, liver and other transplants are all possible because of animal research”(O’Neil 210).
The people claim that, animal testing infringes animal’s rights, makes animal suffering in the experiments, and some of animal experiments may never be useful to human beings. This is true, but we cannot stop animal testing. According to the article “Facts about Animal Research” by Cook (2006), the smallpox has disappeared from the earth because scientists get vaccines from cows. Also, the scientists got insulin, which is the only drug, which can control diabetes, from dogs and fish. Many medicines are related to medical animal experiments, we cannot give up medical animal experiments.
Using animal testing we are able to figure out if a product or vaccine is safe for people to use. If it was not for the animals the only way we would be able to tell if it was safe would be to test it on ourselves.
