Affirmative Action Helps Qualified Minorities
Affirmative action doesn't require a company to hire the local percentage of women and minorities, qualified or not. The program determines the percentage of qualified women and minorities available to a company, then sets flexible goals, to be reached in good faith. As a result, numerous studies show that minorities who land their jobs through affirmative action are not less qualified than their colleagues.
Critics of affirmative action often evoke images of qualified white males being denied jobs so that lesser qualified women and minorities might have them, all in the name of racial and gender fairness. But this is one of the worst myths about affirmative action.
Affirmative action works by determining what percentage of qualified women and minorities are available to a company, and then setting a goal for hiring that percentage. For example, suppose a minority makes up 30 percent of the local population, but only 15 percent are qualified for the company's jobs. The goal for the company is 15 percent, not 30 percent. A...
Animal Farm is a story of the struggle for freedom and power. It takes place on a farm in England called Manor Farm. There are many different kinds of animals on the farm; these animals include horses, geese, dogs, cats, sheep, and pigs, which are the most intelligent of all the animals. The story starts out when old Major, an old, wise pig, calls a meeting in the barn. He tells the animals about a dream he has. The dream was about how the animals should rebel against the leader of the farm, Mr. Jones. He tells them that in the dream he remembered a song called Beasts of England. The song is about how the animals should rebel against the humans. He teaches the animals the song and tells them that he is going to die soon. A few weeks later old Major dies. The animals hold secret meetings about the rebellion a couple times a week. None of the animals really expected the rebellion to happen any time soon, but it happened before anyone expected. Mr. Jones started to neglect the animals, and one day the animals decided that they had enough. A cow broke into the building where the food was kept, and all of the animals decided to get some food. Mr. Jones and some of his helpers came out with whips as started lashing the animals, but were caught by surprise when the animals started to fight back. The men fled in panic, and before anyone realized it, the rebellion had begun.
Discrimination is still a chronic global issue, and drastic inequalities still exist at the present time. Thus, the Affirmative Action Law is an important tool to many minorities most especially to women, and people of color, for the reason that this program provides an equality on educational, and professional opportunities for every qualified individual living in the United States. Without this program, a higher education would have been impossible for a “minority students” to attain. Additionally, without the Affirmative Action, a fair opportunity to have a higher-level career...
I believe Dr. Jekyll created Hyde because he had a theory that man has a good side and a bad side. While investigating this, he developed a potion that could release the evil in a person in the form of a totally different person. Then this person could commit any evil act it wanted, and then drink the potion to return back to normal. The only problem with this is the fact that he drank this potion so many times that he was no longer able to control this process. He was unable to transform back into Dr. Jekyll.
According to author Judith Boss “Affirmative action involves taking positive steps in job hiring and college admissions to correct certain past injustices against groups”. Affirmative Action is not only for people of color it is also for women. It is needed to achieve full gender equity in schools and the workplace. With that said one of the benefits of affirmative action is to make sure that schools and the workplace stays diverse, it’s to help create communities that are open-minded and expose people to different cultures that are different from their own. Having the ability to interact with other race and nationalities is a big part of the education process. It allows students and employees the ability to interact with people of the opposite

Today there is considerable disagreement in the country over Affirmative Action with the American people. MSNBC reported a record low in support for Affirmative Action with 45% in support and 45% opposing (Muller, 2013). The affirmative action programs have afforded all genders and races, exempting white males, a sense of optimism and an avenue to get the opportunities they normally would not be eligible for. This advantage includes admission in colleges or hiring preferences with public and private jobs; although Affirmative Action has never required quotas the government has initiated a benefits program for the schools and companies that elect to be diversified. The advantages that are received by the minorities’ only take into account skin color, gender, disability, etc., are what is recognized as discriminatory factors. What is viewed as racism to the majority is that there ar...
Affirmative Action in the United States is a government program that tries to help overcome the effects of past societal discrimination by allocating jobs and resources to members of specific minority groups (The Columbia 1). The policy was set up to assist every single minority group, which includes women, minority races, handicapped people, and war veterans, especially those of the Vietnam War. Affirmative Action was set up to help these minority groups by giving them strategic advantages when those individuals apply for jobs and higher levels of education. In the Washington Post, it said that, "In its modern form, Affirmative Action can call for an admissions officer faced with two similarly qualified applicants to choose the minority over the white, or for a manager to recruit and hire a qualified woman for a job instead of a man" (Froom...
My attempts to answer the question of what I think I know start with the idea that since affirmative action evolved from the civil rights movement, its aim is to protect certain minority groups as well as women. I think that the idea is used in a business context because there are other discriminatory laws in place to protect outside of work. I can remember from past schooling that there was a Supreme Court case that a white male sued a school institution because he was anti discriminated against because the school had a affirmative action program in place.
The novel ‘Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde’ was written by Robert Louis Stevenson in the Victorian era, which had a very different culture from today. The book was first published in 1886 in England and it brought success to the author. The Victorians had strict moral codes to live under as middle class people and had to be well respected to be considered as a good person. The character’s reputation emerges throughout the novel as an essential tool to success in the society of the era. Another Victorian value expected of them was to live a life without any sin and to obey the Bible as literalists. However, this only prompted people to keep certain thoughts secluded, behind closed doors instead of eliminating them.
...of bettering the Victorian society, although it went entirely wrong. The falling action toward the denouement occurred when Dr. Jekyll was unable to create anymore of the potion needed to keep Dr Jekyll intact; resulting in Hyde completely taking over the body of Dr. Jekyll.
Animal Farm can be categorized as a fairy tale, or a satire. The story tells the tale of the Manor Farm that is overrun by the animals and renamed Animal Farm. The animals founded their new farm on equality, free from human control or oppression. However, the pigs take leadership of the farm and quickly become controlling, and more and more similar to humans. By the end of the book the pigs declare their intentions of allying with the humans against all the laboring classes of both the human and animal groups. And their decree of equality that stated: “all animals are equal,” was distorted by the pigs to say: “all animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.” Animal farm is said to be a fairy tale due to its surreal qualities such as talking animals. Although, it can also be called a satire as Orwell uses humor to encourage reform and maximize the faults of communism and totalitarianism.
The story of Animal Farm takes place in a farmhouse, somewhere in England. The farm animals are property of the "cruel" and "evil" farmer Mr. Jones. Old Major, a wise pig, and one of the oldest animals on the farm, calls for a secret meeting to take place later at night. At the meeting, Old Major tells the animals about a dream he recently had. In his dream, he sees a revolution taking place against Mr. Jones, and the freedom of all animals. Old Major points out to the animals that the cause of their miserable existences is the tyranny of man, who is a lazy, useless creature who steals the fruits of the animals for his own advantage. He encourages the animals to band together to defeat their enemy, and teaches them "Beasts of England," the song which becomes their revolutionary anthem and battle cry. But just before his dream becomes a reality, three days later Old Major passes away in his sleep. The speech gives the animals a new outlook on life, and feel it is their duty to fulfill his dream. And so, the revolution of the farm animals begins.
Animal farm is a book about the struggle to be an animal. It shows how animals do not like the way they are treated by being used to do the humans work for them. The animals are inspired by Old Major who always wanted to overthrow the humans but never saw to it. Animal farm descends into a totalitarianism like government because of greed, power hungry animals, and people not against speaking Napoleon.
When reading animal farm you can either view it as no more than animals eradicating their farmer and attempting to live a life without the humans or you can see it from a more intellectual point of view and realize that those animals represent people and that the
