People don't truly accept life for what it is until they've actually tasted adversity and went through those misfortunes and suffering. We are put through many hardships in life, and we learn to understand and deal with those issues along the way. We find that life isn't just about finding one's self, but about creating and learning from our experiences and background. Adversity shapes what we are and who we become as individuals. Yann Martel's Life of Pi shows us that adverse situations help shape a person's identity and play a significant role in one's lief by determining one's capabilities and potential, shaping one's beliefs and values, and defining the importance and meaning of one's self.
Adversity has the effect of evoking abilities which, in booming circumstances, would have lain dormant. Through adversity we come to see ourselves grow and advance as individuals, and realize our true potential. In retrospect, we see Pi overcoming fear and loss and realizing what he is capable of and his potential as one of God's disciples. Adversity brings out the finest in people, the most magnifcant qualities and abilities that a person can possess. Yann Martel expresses through this writing that people fall victim to adversity all the time, but our understanding for different situations makes us able to determine our capabilities as individuals. Pi has many potential talents and abilities that he just hasn't uncovered yet and could use to survive. Throughout the novel Pi goes through many life changing experiences, overcomes many obstacles and pushes his limits. Like when Pi catches the fish and kills it for the first time. Adversity plays such a big role in our lives that it's almost invisible. We don't realize that practically everyday we face it and set it up to determine who we are going to be. Sometimes people are given a really crappy deck of cards and don’t know how to handle them. When were in a difficult situation, or faced with adversity we have two choices. Battle through it and become an even greater individual because of it or succumb to the situation and give up. It it all depends on how much determination a person has to fight through the adversity and in turn, become a better person.

Stranded for 227 days at sea in a lifeboat, with no one else except an adult Bengal tiger. This is exactly what the main character Pi, in "The Life of Pi" went through. "Life of Pi" by Yann Martel is a story about a boy named Piscine Molitor Patel, an Indian boy who survives more than seven months floating on a lifeboat in the Pacific Ocean, with no one else but a 450-pound tiger (Cooper). Yann Martel was born on June 25, 1963, in Salamanca, Spain. His parents, Emile Martel and Nicole Perron, were both born in Canada. He spent his childhood in several different countries, including France, Mexico, the United States, Canada, and Costa Rica. As an adult, he lived in many other places but one of them was India, which may be where he got inspiration for writing “Life of Pi”. Yann Martel uses the literary elements similes and foreshadowing, to express the theme that believing in religion can give you the faith to want to survive.
Upon being faced with adversity many individuals are prone to shutting down but true strength derives from the ability to become stronger from obstacles in your path and how you develop them into opportunities. Throughout a person’s lifespan, an individual will always be confronted with hard and difficult obstacles that they must overcome such as the divorce of parents, the death of a loved one, or even relocating homes. People should try to approach these obstructions with open arms and try to learn how to become better individuals from it and not just try to get over it. Hello everyone! I am Muhes Ariyaratnam and this is speech on coping with adversity. Everyone faces adversities big or small. Michael Jordan was cut from his high school basketball team, and Steve Jobs was kicked out of his own company. They went on to have very successful careers in their respective fields. Two of the greatest humans faced adversity. Similarly the book Life of Pi by Yann Martel and the play King Lear by William Shakespeare contain the same theme of coping with adversity. In both texts characters cope with loss of loved ones, poor mentality, and nature.
All humans deep down inside have a way of surviving in the world we live in right now. At times they’re compared to animals due to the comparison we show with them at times. Life of Pi had many human to animal’s comparison to where they showed their inner savage instincts to survive some of life trials. Deep down, when humans need too, they revert back to natural, savage instinct to survive at any cost. Pi saw this how humans can really be when they’re desperate to see another day.
Success without adversity is impossible. Everyone in life has their ups and downs and nothing in this world is perfect. At some point in life, hardships begin to occur and that’s when the real test begins. Some people rise up and try their absolute best to take a stand against the challenge. Even at the loss of his shadow self, Pi remains connected and constantly misses this part of his persona. After his ordeal on the lifeboat, Pi becomes rational and humane; however his experiences has scarred him, and will forever remain with him. Readers can definitely learn from Pi’s experience with his shadow self. The more we refute our shadow, the more it weighs us down. However, if we are willing to come to terms with the reality of our shadow, learn how it works, “tame” it so that it does not control us, we would be more literate and enlightened.
In Life of Pi by Yann Martel, the main character, Pi Patel, demonstrates a variety of his traits throughout his journey across the Pacific Ocean in a lifeboat with a tiger. Pi shows his courage against the situation that he is facing and changes his relationship with the Richard Parker. This is symbolized by an image of a fist punching through a wall, tied with a tiger. In chapter 37, the ship sinks; Pi sees Richard Parker drowning, instead being concern about his safety, he tries to safe it. After the realization of what he is doing, he keeps distances between him and the tiger. Days pass, he decides to train RP with his whistle, “I had an effect on Richard Parker. In Life of Pi there were two main and obvious themes, belief in god and survival. Life of Pi’s structure is the best to develop these two themes because douring Pi’s adventure and unplanned journey, he relies on these two things, survival and the belief in god to finally reach civilazation.There are quotes to help me prove this statement. On part 2 chapter 93, the author writes, “It was natural that, as bereft as I was, in the throes of unremitting suffering, I should turn to god,” In this quote, the author says that after so much suffering, it was natural to turn to god, as he did. To begin, the transformation of Pi’s behavior and actions play a big role throughout his survival out at sea. In the novel Life of Pi, one can see that Pi has altered himself in contrast to his more devoted and orthodox past in order to survive. For example, in the novel, whilst flying fish are flying over the boat, Pi sets out to catch one for him self and manages to catch a flying fish. Disgusted by the feeling of the fishes suffering, he hesitantly murders it. (Martel202-203). The act of murdering alone is despised by Pi and given his many religious views this must have been a very difficult task for him to accomplish since the animal did not do anything to harm him. This also conveys an immense importance to the development of not only Pi himself but the rest of the novel as well. Furthermore, this can also be a symbol of Pi having to adapt to be able to survive at sea. Pi, having been a vegetarian his whole life and very fond of religion, this indicates that he has an understanding of what he needs to be done in order to survives and that he is willing to go against all his beliefs to obtain his survival. Sometimes adversity can change people in many various ways. Everyone responds to adversity in their own way, sometimes they soften and become weak , some form a shell around their emotion, and other times they turn the problem into something beautiful. I believe the way adversity affects you is based on your upbringing and the way you process obstacles throughout your life. There is no right or wrong way to deal with adversity, not everyone has the same background or issues. There’s a story that separates adversity into three categories; a carrot, an egg, and a coffee bean. I’ve came to the conclusion that I’m an egg.
“Hardships often prepare ordinary people for an extraordinary destiny.” (C.S. Lewis) Adversity is a difficult situation, it happens in everybody's life. It is something you cannot control but it is something that you can overcome, whether it is a big or small problem there is always a way to get over it. I believe that everyone has a characteristic to overcome adversity you just have to find it, mental toughness, determination, physical strength. Without characteristics like these it would be a lot harder to overcome.
In conclusion, the main idea in Life of Pi is that having the will to survive is a key component to survival. The three ways this is shown is through symbolism of the colour orange, having religion on the protagonist’s side and the thirst and hunger experienced by the protagonist. Things do not always happen the way one would want them to happen: “Things didn’t turn out the way they were supposed to, but what can you do? You must take life the way it comes at you and make the best of it” (101) Faith determines ones destiny and nothing can be changed about that, one can live their life to the fullest and enjoy every moment and not regret it. No matter what faith throws at one, as long as they have the will to survive they can pull through anything.
