How has adversity shaped who you are? Throughout your life you encounter many situations, some of which seem small, others appear to be life altering. What I have found in my life is that no matter what situation you think you are experiencing, your reaction to it can dictate more than you could have ever imagined. In moments of adversity I discovered my attitude impacts the result of the issue, and those around me. Charles Swindoll once said, “Life is ten percent what happens to you, and ninety percent how you react to it.” Adversity has shaped who I am by allowing me to see the result of my attitude and actions. Without a struggle, you’ll never be challenged, you’ll never have to take a leap of faith, or take a risk. Adversity allows you …show more content…
Of course as a child your mind is filled with the extreme ideas, like pulling someone from a burning building, or even taking a bullet for someone you love. Even though those events could certainly appear in my life, I have found a different way to save a life, or lives. The career I plan to obtain isn’t one of miracles or life saving procedures, let’s face it the closest thing to saving a life as a dentist is probably removing an infected tooth. You don’t need to be a superhero to save a life, it could be as simple as offering a helping hand. My service to others won’t just be a part of my occupation, but throughout every aspect of my life. When people ask what you want to do when you grow up, the majority of people say their job, I want to be different. Sure, a dentist as always been a dream of mine, but so has being a mother, and teacher. When applying to college I struggled picking my major of choice. Do I pick my childhood dream of being a dentist, or do I follow in my parents’ footsteps and become a teacher? It wasn’t until the spring of my senior year that I discovered I could do both. Being a teacher is more than showing up to school everyday and explaining things to students, teaching is helping someone learn or understand something by example or experience. Exposing possibility, and giving opportunity in everyday life will teach someone just as effectively as having them sitting a desk. My future plans in terms of a career in serving others is to save lives by
Once, a wise soul has spoken, “Sometimes adversity is what you need to face in order to become successful”. Adversity means having troubles and difficulties. It’s what you need to persevere through in order to do something you’ve wanted to do for a long time. If you want to pass that test, you’ve gotta conquer your fears and fight through all the troubles that arrive in front of you. Become your own hero. Adversity is a situation that took place in the novel “The Outsiders”, by S.E. Hinton.
Our life is like a story. Everything we do and every adversity we overcome helps us write our chapters. “Adversity is like a strong wind. It tears away from us all but the things that cannot be torn, so that we see ourselves as we really are.” In this quote by Arthur Golden we recognize that the adversity we face determines who we are as human beings. Some of the adversity we face can alter our lives drastically. In the novel, The Kite Runner, by Khaled Hosseini, the main character encounters many events of adversity, some of which changed his life forever.
Adversity is a problem that everyone can face, It does not discriminate and could affect everybody. The book To Kill A Mockingbird is a great story to show adversity and how they can overcome the adversity.| To be successful in the face of adversity, you need to stay positive, remember your purpose, and have determination. First of all, you need to stay positive. Everybody will face adversity at some point in their life. It is your job to power through and succeed.
Without adversity, I wouldn’t fully recognize the significance of prosperity and success. For example, in middle school, I had a difficult time with a couple people who I thought were my friends. Though they were nice to me, I just did not like the way they treated others, and eventually I stopped supporting them. Though it is not a particularly positive situation, I did derive meaning and awareness from this experience. Today, I know that the friends I want will not have demeaning characteristics. I found my identity by establishing my values and confirming them through my actions. I recall a conversation I had with my grandpa when he told me about how it doesn't matter about what other people are trying to achieve but rather what changes I want to bring about in the world. This advice has stuck with me for as long as I remember and the close rapport I have with my grandparents truly does inspire me to become the person I know I can be. In my opinion, identity and self-awareness are aspects in life that are mutable processes and often change throughout a lifetime based on circumstances. I realized that my experiences through both prosperity and hardship only serve to enhance my decisions and purpose in
A person’s character is developed by the surroundings around them as well as their experiences. The Roman poet Horace quotes “…Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents in which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant…” I agree with the Roman poet, Horace, in that adversity has a way of waking talent from slumber. Adversity can encourage people in ways success and wealth cannot, as there is a benefit in the hardship. In Henrietta Lacks, by Rebecca Skloot, as well as Macbeth, by Shakespeare, adversity has developed the characters. From my observation, I strongly agree that experiences, such as hardship and danger, shape a person.
“Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant- Horace.” After analyzing this quotation about adversity from the Roman Poet Horace, it is evident that his assentation about the role that adversity plays in developing a person’s character is accurate because without some sort of hardships or trial majority of the celebrities and population wouldn’t have been as successful. For example, world renowned soccer players, Walt Disney, Famous authors, and more wouldn’t have been prosperous without their misfortune pushing and inspiring them to want a better life for themselves.
Adversity is what guides an individual towards self-discovery. “Not until we are lost do we begin to understand ourselves.” This quote relates to adversity very well. That is because when going through hardships, an individual is able to realize what he/she is capable of doing. For instance, if a student chooses full IB for high school, but later realizes that is t...
Success without adversity is impossible. Everyone in life has their ups and downs and nothing in this world is perfect. At some point in life, hardships begin to occur and that’s when the real test begins. Some people rise up and try their absolute best to take a stand against the challenge. Then there are others that would crawl back into their shells, crying for mercy. There should be no excuse for giving up or not putting in the effort. People are only successful in winning the battle of adversity when they are mentally tough. The intense game of adversity can be referred to football.
Award-Winning author Laura Hillenbrand writes of the invigorating survival story of Louie Zamperini in her best selling book, Unbroken. Louie Zamperini was an ambitious, record-breaking Olympic runner when he was drafted into the American army as an airman during World War II. On the mission that led him to embark on a journey of dire straits, Louie’s plain crashed into the Pacific Ocean, leaving only him and two other crewmen as survivors. Stranded on a raft in shark infested waters, without any resources or food, and drifting toward enemy Japanese territory, the men now have to face their ultimate capture by Japanese, if they survive that long. Louie responded to his desperation with dexterity, undergoing his plight with optimism and confidence, rather than losing hope. In this memorable novel, Hillenbrand uses a vivid narrative voice to divulge Louie’s tale of endurance, and proves that the resilience of the human mind can triumph through adversity.
In this essay/report I will explain to the best of my abilities, my possible career path. I have wanted to be many things. In grade 1, I wanted to be a superhero, and that hope stayed out for a while. Later on, when I was 10, my brain started getting new ideas, exploring the world around me, thinking of other things aside form cartoons and I thought to myself, how in the world am I going to become a superhero? I started thinking of other jobs like firefighter, police officer, engineer, construction worker etc., etc. But then I decided it was no good. Then one day when I was watching an interview on TV, a firefighter was being interviewed and one of the questions was: How long did it take you to decide what you wanted to be? And he said a long time. Then I wondered how long a long time would be, I wanted to jump into the TV and ask the guy how long a long time was. Hmm, I wondered, how long is a long time and then I answered my question. “It’s going to be a long time ‘till it’s a long time, I’ve got nothing to worry about.” That question just flew off my mind until at the start of grade eight when I encountered this question again, and I answered it. It took a while and some research but I answered it. I want to be a Neurosurgeon when I grow up.
The obstacle’s a person faces in their life greatly affects them. Their interpretation on things may change,or they as a person may change. Hardships are something we all have to face, and they teach us a valuable lesson that changes us for better, or for worse.
In conclusion, to the above points, anyone is capable of triumphing over adversity. No matter how hard the circumstances are, each individual is able to. Unfortunately for some, they lack the need to triumph and in the end fail to beat adversity. Passion and commitment is all it takes to knock down those barriers and succeed in life. “Become the person you have always dreamt of being”.
Life is constantly throwing obstacles at you and if you choose not to face them, you will never go anywhere in life and you will be lagging behind with the fear of confrontation and determination. Overcoming obstacles is extremely important because it teaches you hard work, it gives you pride and confidence as you face more problems, and if you don’t get through obstacles, you won’t get anywhere because we encounter obstacles everyday of our lives. Hard work and perseverance are skills every person needs to possess to be successful, and getting through issues is the best way to gain these skills. As we continue to overcome what life throws at us, it makes it immensely simpler to face more and more. Take your job as an example, more successful and higher up
All my life I have been drawn to help people by trying to find solutions for their problems or situations. Not only did I feel the pain of others suffering, I wanted to be the one to help ease the pain, even if I was not capable of permanently making it disappear. I was empathetic, and it was natural for me to want to understand emotionally and intellectually to assist others. This is a trait Inherited from my parents at a young age, and has made a marked influence on me. Although I did not know exactly what job title I wanted to pursue, I was fully aware that I was put on this earth to help better the lives of as many people as I could, if not everyone.
My plan in life is to become a Police Officer. Not only would that give me the opportunity to help other people but becoming a Police Officer also gives me the opportunity to follow in my Uncles footsteps and do something that I have wanted to do my whole life. I have always wanted to make a difference in the world, and this gives me the chance. Performing justice the right way and making sure that the laws of the government are obeyed is the job that I want to pursue. Being a Police Officer is a challenging job but also very rewarding. There would be a number of skills I would need to learn, not to mention that every day on the job would be a learning experience itself. Every single day that I would go to work, I would potentially be saving someone’s life. Stopping a speeder, arresting a criminal, preventing harmful attempts, they are things that would save someone’s life. Even if my actions were not as simple as that, for example, if I were to witness an accident or arrive onto the scene of one, just being there gives me the opportunity to take preventative measures. When I become a Police Officer, it woul...
