Life is not a one way path travelling to our destination, there are many obstacles that people will experience in their lives. When these obstacles occur, there are many paths to be taken. However, the best option is to rise up and persevere through these hardships; to continue travelling down the right path. In the movie Forrest Gump, directed by Robert Zemeckis, Forrest lives a life full of obstacles, many of which develop from his low IQ. Along the way he also helps his friends get through their tough times. Despite being different, Forrest is able to overcome his obstacles and become very successful and happy. Forrest’s IQ is significantly lower than the average person’s and as a kid, it restricts him from going to a normal school. Even though it is not him who creates the opportunity to have a proper education, when he is given the chance he makes the most out of it by graduating high school, and going further to attain a college degree. Academics are not the only part of school that pose a challenge to him; Forrest has to put up with exclusion as well as verbal and physical abuse. Even though it is not easy for Forrest to get along with others, he is able to get through his social hindrances by finding someone special named Jenny. She loves him, looks out for him, and through the bullying Forrest ends up finding great happiness with his one special girl. After school, Forrest joins the military, which is one of the best solutions for him. As a result of his IQ, finding a long lasting career would be very difficult. The army is a respected job that Forrest excels at far past the ordinary person. Thus, joining the army creates many opportunities for Forrest, changing his life for the better. Mike Lupica is a very engaging author. He is such a good author that he has won the Jim Murray award, and two best selling book awards. Lupica writes in a style that includes overcoming adversity, showing friendship, and his writing is very relatable. These three styles make for a fun and exciting journey in each book that he writes.

At the University of Alabama, two African American students are granted acceptance after an enormous ordeal on blacks going to colleges with whites because of the insane amount of racism the United States of America had. As the two African American students made their way up the staircase, one dropped a book and Forrest rushed through police officers and rioters to pick up the book and hand the book to the colored student who dropped it. Forrest’s ignorance definitely contributes to his selflessness and generosity towards people who are different (during the time period in American history the movie was based on), however, it is one of his traits that makes him a true unexpected hero.
According to Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary, perseverance is “a continued effort to do or achieve something despite difficulties, failure, or opposition.” It took perseverance for Johnny to survive getting jumped or for the Curtis brothers to stay together when all odds were against them, but those are some of the main reasons perseverance is a truly significant theme in the book. The movie is a very moving, sensitive and emotional story of redemption. The tale of how a young heartless thug can change into a softhearted guardian. This demonstrates that despite the poor living conditions, awful events and how heartless someone may seem. You can adapt to your surroundings and situations, you can also transform your life. Everyone has good in them you just choose whether to value it and utilize it or not appreciate it and discard it.

Not only does this movie deal with the issues of society, but it points to biblical scriptures that help lead us in the right direction. The biggest lesson that this film taught me was that if I put my complete faith in God, then no matter what happens, he will provide, watch over, and take care of me. I learned that expressing belief in God is not enough. I have to live everyday believing and trusting him and I have to show my trust and faith through my actions and my words.
