For employees, being unionized offers many advantages. Unionized employees experience more job security than non-unionized employees, because the union has to be present and defends their members against disciplinary action or termination. They can also file grievances, & complaints with their union representatives, who then take them up with management on their behalf. Unions are thorough when it comes to working conditions, in order to ensure a safe, pleasant working environment. Unionized employees can also expect steady raises and benefits, such as health coverage, sick leave and paid vacation time, to name a few. The exact nature of monetary compensation and coverage varies based on the CBA, which is reviewed and negotiated before expiration.

An advantage for managers is that collective bargaining agreements with unions establish a set agreement that can't be disputed until the contract is up. This makes the costs associated with pay and benefits more stable. Employee turnover is also less common, because employees generally enjoy the safety, security and lucrative compensation that unions bring. Making employee training more likely to be a worthwhile investment.

The disadvantages of labor unions for employees are reasonably low compared to the benefits, however; the disadvantages can be severe. For example, if management and union representatives cannot reach an agreement, strikes are a serious concern. Non-unionized workers can strike as well, but the lack of a collective bargaining agreement can cause this to happen at any time, rather than during a negotiation. With an organized labor force, you are likely to face more challenges to actions you take regarding an employee’s status. While individual employees might not have the financial resources or will to contest such things as a termination, a demotion, a lack of promotion, or alleged harassment or discrimination, a union worker may be encouraged to file a suit or appeal your actions, and may be offered union support to do so.
