While in high school, I took many Advanced Placement classes and passed the accompanying exams. Because of this, I was able to begin college with many of my general education credits already completed. This has allowed me to fulfill all but one of the general education classes required by UC Santa Cruz. I will complete my final remaining general education course in Winter quarter 2017. Having finished these requirements will allow me to focus exclusively on classes for my major and possible minor without the distraction of lower division classes. Throughout my time in college I have completed not only general education requirements but have also completed the prerequisites for a Cognitive Science major and Education minor at UC Santa
The first story I would pitch would be the monument opening today at 10 a.m. at the National Infantry Museum. This is black history month and the Buffalo Soldiers were the first all-black infantry. The monument will be unveiled today. Alpha Phi Alpha’s local chapter Delta Iota Lambda is honoring the heroic group of soldiers. Most of the units served between 1866 and 1951. The event is free and open to the public, which will allow them to witness history. Some of the units were stationed at Fort Benning, which is another local aspect. These soldiers did the impossible, so I can speak to the Master of Ceremonies, as well as local historians, military members, and decedents of those brave men who will be at the unveiling. In his disclosure, Snowden revealed about NSA that they are mining data works all along and secretly monitoring U.S. citizens' personal information by accessing through different servers.
Culture Centers in Higher Education: Perspectives on Identity, Theory, and Practice is a powerful and enlightening book by Lori D. Patton. Patton is a higher education scholar who focuses on issues of race theories, African American experiences on college campuses, student development theories, campus environments, inclusion, and multicultural resources centers at higher education institutions. She has a variety of publications and was one of the first doctoral students to complete a dissertation that focused exclusively on Black culture centers entitled, “From Protest to Progress: An Examination of the Relevance, Relationships and Roles of Black Culture Centers.” In Campus Culture Centers in Higher Education Patton collaborates with many higher education scholars and faculty members to discuss various types of racial and ethnic culture centers in higher education, their overall effectiveness, relevance, and implications for improvement in relation to student retention and success. Diversity, inclusion and social justice have become prevalent issues on all college campuses, and this piece of literature gives a basic introduction for individuals unfamiliar with cultural resource centers. This book successfully highlights contributions of culture centers and suggestions for how centers can be reevaluated and structured more efficiently. For many faculty, administrators, and student affairs professionals unfamiliar with the missions and goals of culture centers, Patton’s text provides a concrete introduction and outline for the functionality of these resources and also offers recommendations and improvements for administrators managing multicultural centers.

Sophocles wrote the classic tragedy Antigone in 496-406 BC this play dramatizes the conflict between self-morality versus human law by representing each conflict by two characters; Antigone and Creon. In this play Antigone decides to bury her brother Polyneices regardless of the king Creon’s decree. After Antigone is caught Creon decides that the punishment of death will be enforced. Crying is important in infant development, as it’s infants’ way of communicating with the world surrounding them. The types of crying an infant does is thus important to understand, to know what the infant needs as he/she cannot explain themselves with the spoken language. Furthermore, crying is important to know whether or not the infants lungs have filled with air, since they couldn’t be crying without that, but also crying infants render signs that, for an example tells whether the newborn baby’s central nervous system works and functions. I have often wondered what it would be like to experience the freedom of choosing my own class schedule. This has to be infinitely more stimulating and enjoyable. I am also aware that college will be significantly more challenging, but I have always found it easier to study for a class that interests me. I am willing to accept the fact that as long as I am in school, there will be required courses which may not engender excitement or enthusiasm; however, success should not be as difficult to achieve due to the maturity that is developing during this last year of high school. In addition, I have gained an understanding of the benefit of being well rounded. There is value in all classes taken. It helps to know that even my least favorite subject will contribute to the ultimate goal of personal and career development.

Activists; who are they? People who support or oppose a cause or issue. They are individuals who fight and defend their viewpoints - protecting and standing for what they believe is right. These advocates persuade and gather many supporters for their cause. Sometimes, they get their argument across successfully, resulting in events to go the way that they desire. Other times, however, things just do not go their way, resulting in defeat. In a way similar to activists, Sammy, the protagonist of John Updike’s short story “A & P”, stands his ground for what he thinks is moral, however, only to later face disappointment. On a hot scorching summer day, Sammy, a teenage clerk at an A & P grocery store, is working the cash register when three ladies about his age enter barefoot, dressed in nothing but bathing suits, to purchase herring snacks. College students are “always” prepared for their freshman year. They already have their majors picked out and know exactly what classes they plan to take, right? In reality, they do not have a clue about what their college classes are going to consist of, which makes general education courses an important part for college students across the nation.
Obtaining a college degree is something that most parents wish for their children, but it can sometimes be an obstacle for someone that did not receive a proper education from a young age. I grew up in South Central and I must admit that for the most part my education was exceptional from first to seventh grade due to me attending magnet schools. But in eighth grade I attended a LAUSD middle school and then a LAUSD high school due to my parents changing neighborhoods.
Throughout my life I have constantly faced challenges and set reasonable goals. Many of the goals I’ve set are short term and require multiple steps to achieve. One of those personal goals is to finish out the senior school year by taking advantage of as many opportunities as possible. The process of obtaining a college degree is not an easy task, it requires a large amount of time invested. In order to graduate, colleges and universities require a certain amount of credits. These credits achieved by taking courses referred to as general education classes.
