Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) is a neurological disorder. It can cause behavior problems, issues with listening, problems with school work, including falling behind on school work, completing tasks, and social issues. There is also a condition ADHD which is Attention Deficit Disorder with Hyperactivity. Both of these conditions can be treated. There is no cure for either of the disorders. Children and adults can be treated with stimulant medications. Such as Adderall, Ritalin, and Vyvanse. With these medication they can have better control of the ADD or ADHD. First they can make sure to keep good structure in the childs life, use positive discipline, stay calm, set good examples, have a healthy family realtionship and take breaks when they are needed. Both parents and children may need a break from eachother. Those are all things that can make the daily life of living with ADD and ADHD much easier.
There are also many Celebrities or well known people who have come out and talked about their diagnosis of ADD/ADHD. A few of them are comedian and actor Howie Mandel, Dancing with the stars dancer Karina Smirnoff and well known singer Justin Timberlake among many others. They have all let the world know that they have this disorder and want to help get awareness out to others who maybe suffering as well. When people think of a child diagnosed with ADHD, they think of a wild child bouncing off of the walls out of control, but this is not always the case. Some children diagnosed with the disorder can be quiet and are perceived as daydreamers. It is the daydreamers who can go undiagnosed longer because their symptoms are not as disruptive to the people around them. At a young age, symptoms are already starting to show.
What is the reasoning behind ADHD Awareness Week? Why are there more people involved like many other charities? I have heard that the reasoning behind ADHD Awarness Week is to support the cause and treatment for ADHD. I think this is a good cause, not only to raise money to support the scientific research on the causes of ADHD, but to also educate the community. ADHD has been the leading condition amongst children and young adults for a over several decades. Why was this condition not noticed back in the early decades? I can remember growing up as a young girl and I could never stay attentive at any given moment, I was always figity. Not being attentive is one of the advised symptoms of ADHD. Other symptoms of ADHD can include, talkative, certain mood swings, maybe sad all the time. Never can stay on task and sometimes even overly hyper.
...we want to. The way I have felt inside my head is not normal. I may not be able to describe it clearly, but it is a feeling that I know-- and I recognize is wrong. It is not the result of bad parenting or poor schooling; it is only a feeling that I was not able to identify as a child. I will no longer be told that I am faking a disorder. Instead of seeking a diagnosis, I felt my school district (and the rest of the world) was just trying to prove me wrong and throw me into a pile of statistics about false cases of AD/HD. People can't read minds, so how can they say that someone else does not think differently than they do? Our high-speed modern world affects people's concentration and raises stress levels, but it does not make someone ADD. We are born with it. It was only a matter of time until I was able to recognize my problem and confront it.
Most people believe ADD and ADHD people have the same emotional and behavioral tendencies. Emotionally, ADD and ADHD is either at high point or low point there is no in between. Both ADD and ADHD adolescents and adults are prone to having severe anxiety. This causes a person with either disorder to feel frustrated with themselves. Case in point,

There are many symptoms associated with ADHD but the most common include difficulty staying focused and paying attention, difficulty controlling behavior, and hyperactivity. Scientists are not exactly sure of what causes ADHD but they are more comfortable with the idea that a lot of different factors play a role in its development, such as, genes, environment, brain injuries, sugar, and food additives. The most widely used treatment is the drugs but this is not the only way to treat ADHD.
After reading the articles Driven to Distraction and Lost in Translation, both from Today’s Parent magazine, I have learned many new things. I learned that it is sometimes not very easy to pick out a child with ADHD, even if it is your own child. It could take years to discover that a child has ADHD. It can be easily detected once the child has entered elementary school. One of the signs of ADHD is falling behind in school, or acting up and not being able to pay attention for long periods of time. This causes frustration for the child, the parents, teachers and the other students in the classroom. It is difficult for parents because they do not want to believe that their child has a disability. It is even harder for the child because they are the ones that have to deal with the name calling, being held back a grade or two and just knowing that they are different. The issue of being different for a child living with ADHD is very stressful and could make the child not want to learn new things or pay attention in school. They just give up on trying to learn.
Parents might want another way to approach things when it comes to their children. Some options could be watching the child’s diet, something that seems to trigger the hyperactivity that mostly leads to food dyes. Better and more consistent discipline along with giving your child a lot of attention helps the child to reinforce their behavior. The most important thing is making sure that the child that has ADHD is getting a lot of sleep. Being sleepy makes them more prone to jumping on that emotional roller coaster.
One of the points they stress is how behavioral therapy can be a solution, but it is less effective and has it’s limitations. Despite it being less reliable, there are reasons why professionals and parents decide to give it a try. One of these is that parents and professionals don’t want to give their child medication. Another is that medication isn’t enough to curb their child’s symptoms. Lastly, their child has had reactions to the medication they’ve been given previously. In addition to those reasons, behavioral therapy has it’s limitations. It isn’t able to account for every setting the child will be in. Behavioral therapy isn’t able to reduce all of the core characteristics that come with having ADHD (short-attention span, impulsivity, hyperactivity). Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder is a psychological condition that usually begins in early childhood and often lasts into adulthood (University of Illinois, n.d.). Have you ever noticed a child having trouble concentrating, that can't seem to sit still, who interrupts others during their conversation, or has acted impulsively without thinking? Most of us can think of a child that has these problems, but for some children, these behaviors are uncontrollable and can interfere with their ability to form friendships or their success in school (Bussing & Grohol, n.d.).
The American heritage Dictionary defines Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder as, “an attention deficit disorder in which hyperactivity is present.” Attention Deficit Disorder is defined as, “A syndrome, usually diagnosed in childhood, characterized by a persistent pattern of impulsiveness, a short attention span, and often hyperactivity, and interfering especially with academic, occupational, and social performance.” ADHD is most often diagnosed during childhood and was formerly believed to have lessened and ended as the child matured but recent studies have found that between 35 and 50 % of all cases persist into adulthood.

The purpose of this research was to describe and understand Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and the most effective treatment options that are available today. ADHD is a mental health disorder that affects 3-9% of the population in ways that, if left untreated, can wreak havoc on the mind of the sufferer. It makes concentration difficult, large tasks seem insurmountable, and causes impulsive and hyperactive tendencies. Fortunately, research and experiments have led to new and effective treatments to help those who suffer from this disorder (Dupaul 8). This research examined journal articles and internet sources on the topic to help unlock the complexities of the disorder through scientific research. It also was a way to separate the myths of the disorder from the truths, while discovering the causes, diagnosis methods, and best treatment alternatives to battle this prevalent disorder.
ADD and ADHD are commonly talked about as if they are different diseases, they are actually the same disease. In recent years, ADD has disappeared due its similarity to ADHD. ADD was, in the past, a separate disorder because it focused solely on the inattentive side of things. ADD is now a part of ADHD because it is referred as a sub-type to ADHD. ADHD is an attention disorder that is becoming more commonly diagnosed and treated due to misdiagnoses and misunderstanding of how to deal with the disorder. How does one find out if they have ADHD? Well, to find out if someone has the disorder, they must first understand what ADHD is and what causes it.
ADHD can be treated in a couple of different ways. ADHD is a disorder that can not be cured. Symptoms of ADHD are controlled with medications, various types of psychotherapy, education or training, or a combination of treatments. With one of these treatments or a mixture of treatments people with ADHD can learn to be successful in school or the work environment and have productive lives.
