Some say that a picture is worth a thousand words, and some say that the book is always better than the movie. So who is right? In the case of The Hunger Games, by Suzanne Collins, the book is truly better than its film adaptation. While the film is still amazing and gives a great summary of the book, the film does not portray the characters the way the book does. The film makes it seem like Katniss, the main character as is helpless and weak. On the other hand in the book, Katniss is brave, strong, talented, and caring.

The Hunger Games takes place in a country called Panem. Panem is split into 12 different districts that are rivals. Each district works hard for a different necessity that is essential for life. The main character, Katniss …show more content…

One of the ways Suzanne Collins portrays Katniss as a talented person is from this quote, “She’s excellent,’ says Peeta, ‘My father buys her squirrels. He always comments on how the arrows never pierce the body. She hits everyone in the eye. It’s the same with the rabbits she sells the butcher. She can even bring down deer’”(Pg. 89). This quote shows that Peeta proves to Haymitch that Katniss was extremely talented with the bow and arrow, by acknowledging how his father praises Katniss on her excellent shooting skills. This eventually gives Katniss an advantage in the Hunger Games. Another quote that shows why Katniss is indeed extremely brave and strong is, “I’ll be marked as an easy target. A weakling. I will give no one that satisfaction. ‘Let’s go!’”(pg. 24). This definitely shows that Katniss wants to be portrayed as brave and strong. The third quote shows that Katniss even admits herself that she is a fighter. She admitted that she was “...sort of brave…” and “I’m a fighter”(pg.122). This is interesting coming from Katniss because she is usually modest and humble with her strengths. Katniss must really think she is being extremely brave for her to say this about …show more content…

At the beginning of the movie, Katniss is shown hunting with Gale. Katniss is walking around hunting and Gale scares Katniss. For one, this is showing that Katniss is portrayed as weak because she was scared easily. Then, she misses her target and then proceeds to leave the forest. Another time when Katniss is portrayed as weak, is at the Reaping. The Reaping is a ceremony when they choose who will be the tributes from each district. In the movie, Katniss takes a while to make her decision to volunteer as tribute for Prim. This gives an impression that Katniss was contemplating whether she should volunteer or not. The third point is that Peeta never commented how Katniss always shoots the animals in the eye. Also, when she was being scored by the judges, and she shot the apple in the pig’s mouth, it seemed as if Katniss was just lucky to make the shot, not out of skill. Also, the movie makes the story mostly about Katniss and Peeta’s love story. For example, in the movie, when Katniss finds Peeta she just moves him to into cave. In the book, Katniss did a lot of work on Peeta such as draining his puss. The last point about the movie is that the producers make Katniss look a lot more helpless. The producers did this by showing that she is always has to have someone helping her, or certain situations worse (that she
