There are many benefits of independent reading. Independent reading helps to build fluency, build vocabulary and also helps to build background of the modern world and the world of literature. Literature allows children to expand their perspective of the world and become more knowledgeable on other peoples perspectives. Independent reading allows students to analyze text which is a major aspect in be prepared for college. Forty seven percent of students who took the ACT in 2009 did not meet the ACT college readiness for Reading section of the ACT Benchmark.

Independent reading allows for student of all ages to be more prepared for their future classes. According to Doctor Suess he says in a one of his poems that the more you read, the more things you will know, the more you learn, the more places you’ll go! (Dr. Suess) This shows how Dr. Suess believes in independent reading because of how it can lead you to bigger advantages in the future. Doctor Seuss, a famous author, said that reading is beneficial and he is an example of his quote. Dr. Seuss is one of the most famous writers in the world and because of his love for reading, he was able to learn to become a succesul writer in the future. …show more content…

John Lock once said, “Reading furnishes the mind only with materials of knowledge; it is thinking that makes what we read ours.” (John Locke) This shows how John Lock an important enlightenment thinker, believes that reading and comprehension is just the basic parts of literature that anyone can do at a young age. He is trying to say that once we analyze something and then interprate it in our own way, it becomes our own.
